National News


Government Launches new Initiative ‘SWADES’ to conduct skill mapping of citizens returning from overseas

  • The Government of India has launched a new initiative called SWADES (Skilled Workers Arrival Database for Employment Support) to conduct a skill mapping exercise of the  skilled citizens returning to the country under the Vande Bharat Mission.
  • SWADES is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • It aims to create a database of qualified citizens based on their skillsets and experience to tap into and fulfil the demand of Indian and foreign companies.
  • The collected information will be shared with the companies for suitable placement opportunities in the country.
  • The online form available on www.nsdcindia.org/swades has been created to gather required details of the returning citizens. The form contains details related to the work sector, job title, employment, years of experience.

Government launches Electronics Manufacturing Scheme 2.0 (Outlay- Rs 50,000 Crore)

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched the Electronics Manufacturing Scheme 2.0 with an outlay of Rs. 50,000 crore (approximately USD 7 billion). It includes three sub-schemes.

(i) Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing,

(ii) Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) and

(iii) Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme.

  • The PLI Scheme shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales (over base year) of goods manufactured in India and covered under the target segments, to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year.
  • The SPECS shall provide financial incentive of 25% on capital expenditure for the identified list of electronic goods, i.e., electronic components, semiconductor/ display fabrication units, Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) units, specialized sub-assemblies and capital goods for manufacture of aforesaid goods.
  • The EMC 2.0 shall provide support for creation of world class infrastructure along with common facilities and amenities, including Ready Built Factory (RBF) sheds / Plug and Play facilities for attracting major global electronics manufacturers, along with their supply chains.
  • These Schemes shall contribute significantly to achieving a USD 1 Trillion digital economy and a USD 5 Trillion GDP by 2025.

Facebook to acquire 9.9% stake in Jio Platforms via Jaadhu Holdings

  • Facebook has announced in April 2020 to acquire 9.9 per cent stake in Jio Platforms, at an investment of USD 5.7 billion (Rs 43,574 crore).
  • As per a nee notification, Facebook will acquire this stake in Jio Platforms via a new entity named Jaadhu Holdings LLC.
  • According to a submission made to the Competition Commission of India, Jaadhu Holdings, LLC is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Facebook, Inc.
  • Jaadhu is a newly incorporated company formed in March 2020 under the laws of the State of Delaware, US…Jaadhu is not engaged in any business in India or anywhere in the world.

Facebook Signs Global Licensing Deal with Indian Music Label Saregama

  • Facebook has entered into a global deal with Saregama, one of India’s oldest and largest music labels, to license its music for video and other social experiences across Facebook and Instagram.
  • That means users can now add Saregama-owned music to their posts and stories on both Facebook and Instagram.
  • Users can choose from over 1,00,000 songs across different genres including film songs, devotional music, ghazals and indipop in more than 25 languages, to add to their social experiences such as videos, stories via music stickers and other creative content.
  • People will also be able to add songs to their Facebook Profile.

Uday Kotak Takes Over as the New President of CII for 2020-21

  • The Managing Director & CEO of Kota Mahindra Bank, Uday Kotak has been appointed as the new President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the financial year 2020-21.
  • He will replace Vikram Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director of Kirloskar Systems Ltd, and Vice Chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
  • Uday has been the President-Designate of CII for the last two years.
  • Meanwhile, Sanjiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv, has been named as the Vice President of the apex industry body for 2020-21.
  • The industry body has also appointed T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, as the President Designate of CII for 2020-21.

Ex Google CFO Patrick Pichette Appointed as new Chairman of Twitter’s Board

  • Twitter Inc has appointed Patrick Pichette, a former chief financial officer (CFO) at Google, as the new chairman of the company’s board.
  • It is the first time in Twitter’s history that an outsider will preside over the group.
  • Pichette will replace Omid Kordestani.
  • Pichette joined Twitter’s board of directors in 2017 and had been lead independent director since the end of 2018.
  • He previously served as Google’s CFO from 2008 until 2015.
  • Meanwhile, Kordestani will stay on as a director, serving on the 11-member board alongside three new directors.

Krishnendu Majumdar becomes first person of colour to be appointed BAFTA Chair

  • Award-winning television producer Krishnendu Majumdar is the first person of color to be named as the chairperson of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in its 73 year-long history.
  • Majumdar is also the youngest chair of BAFTA in the last 35 years. He will remain as chair for the next three years,  the newly extended term for all future BAFTA chairs..
  • He succeeds Pippa Harris, who will now continue as deputy chair.
  • Majumdar is an Emmy-winning and BAFTA-nominated television producer and director. He has been closely involved with BAFTA for 14 year.

V N Datt takes over as C&MD of National Fertilizers Limited (NFL)

  • Shri Virendra Nath Datt Director (Marketing), National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) has taken over the additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director of the Company with effect from 3rd June 2020.
  • He succeeds Manoj Mishra
  • Shri Datt is associated with Company as Director (Marketing) since October 2018.
  • Prior to joining NFL, he was Executive Director in GAIL (India) Limited.
  • Shri Datt also had a 10 year stint with ONGC before joining GAIL in 1995.
  • National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) is a state owned Miniratna (Cat-1) company and producer of chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers and industrial chemicals.

Patna-based NGO ‘SEEDS’ Wins World No Tobacco Day Award 2020

  • Every year, WHO recognizes individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO Regions for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control.
  • This recognition takes the form of WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award and World No Tobacco Day Awards.
  • For the year 2020, Patna based Indian NGO Socio Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS) has conferred the World No Tobacco Day Award, for its efforts to ban pan masala, gutkha, e-cigarettes and hookah in Bihar and Jharkhand.
  • SEEDS is among the three awardees selected from the South-East Asia Region.

NBA Hall Of Famer Wes Unseld Passes Away At 74

  • NBA legend Wes Unseld, one of the greatest American professional basketball player,  has passed away at the age of 74.
  • Unseld is universally considered as the greatest player in league’s history.
  • He led his franchise ‘Washington Wizards’ (the then Baltimore Bullets) to the NBA Championship in 1978.
  • He played for Washington Wizards throughout his entire 13-season playing career and also worked for as a coach and general manager.
  • He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988.
