  • India has designated 10 more wetlands as Ramsar sites recently.
  • Of the total 10 new sites 6 sites are in Tamil Nadu and one each in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
  • With the induction of these 10 new sites, the total Ramsar sites in India has become 64, covering an area of 12,50,361 ha.
  • Designating these sites as Ramsar will help in conservation and management of wetlands and wise use of their resources.

World’s largest floating solar power plant going to be built in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh

  • The world’s largest floating solar power plant is going to be built at Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project will generate 600 Megawatt power by 2022-23.
  • The estimated cost of the project is over Rs. 3000 crores.
  • This solar project will increase the power generation capacity of the state and address the electricity problems in the region.

LIC is Top-Ranked Indian Firm on Fortune Global 500 List; US retailer Walmart tops globally

  • The Fortune Global 500 list for 2022 was released by FORTUNE on August 03, 2022 to rank the world’s largest corporations by revenue for fiscal 2021. 
  • Walmart has acquired the top spot for ninth consecutive year, and overall 17th time since 1995.
  • From India, the recently-listed Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has made to the list for the first time and LIC is also the top ranked firm among Indian corporates.
  • LIC is ranked at 98th position, with revenue of USD 97.26 billion and a profit of USD 553.8 million.
  • Overall nine Indian companies has been featured on the list. This comprise of five state-owned, and four from private sector.

Summit & Conference

IDF World Dairy Summit 2022 to be held in New Delhi

  • The International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS 2022), is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 12 to 15, 2022.
  • The theme of the four-day summit will be ‘Dairy for nutrition and livelihood’.
  • The 2022 edition of the WDS will be held in person, after a gap of two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • At the Summit, India will look to improve its per animal milk productivity by drawing lessons from advanced nations.
  • Before this, India hosted the International Dairy Congress in 1974.

India to host special meeting of UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee in October 2022

  • India will host a special meeting on behalf of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee on October 29, 2022.
  • The theme of the meeting will be “Mindful of the increasing threat posed by the misuse of new and emerging technologies.”
  • The meeting will be attended by diplomats of the 15-nation UN Security Council.
  • Current members of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee are Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway and the UAE, along with five permanent members China, France, Russia, the UK and the US.
  • The special meeting on counter-terrorism would focus on three significant areas:
    1. emerging technologies are experiencing rapid development, growing use by member states (including for security and counter-terrorism purposes),
    2. increasing threat of abuse for terrorism purposes, namely Internet and social media, terrorism financing,
    3. unmanned aerial systems (UAS)

India-US Armies to hold mega military exercise “Yudh Abhyas”  in Uttarakhand’s Auli in October 2022

  • The Armies of India and the US will conduct the 18th edition of fortnight-long mega military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” from October 14 to 31, 2022, at Auli in Uttarakhand.
  • The exercise is aimed at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the two armies.
  • The previous edition of the exercise took place in Alaska, the US, in October 2021..

Indian and French Navies holds Maritime Partnership Exercise in The Atlantic

  • The Navies of India and France conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) in the North Atlantic Ocean on July 29 and 30, 2022.
  • Indian Navy’s guided-missile frigate INS Tarkash and the French Fleet Tanker FNS Somme participated in the exercise.
  • The two ships carried out various surface and aerial exercises that included replenishment at sea (RAS) exercise, joint air operations with the maritime surveillance aircraft Falcon 50 participating in multiple simulated missile engagements and air defence drills.
  • The successful conduct of these exercises demonstrated the high degree of professionalism and interoperability between the two navies.

Fintech platform BharatPe appoints Nalin Negi as new CFO

  • Nalin Negi has been appointed as the new chief financial officer (CFO) of Fintech startup BharatPe.
  • Earlier he was the CFO of credit cards issuer SBI Card.
  • In his new role, Negi will be working towards making the company EBITDA positive by March 2023 and lead the financial readiness for the company, which is getting ready for an initial public offering (IPO)..
  • Ebitda stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

Sports

Indian contingent wins five medals on Day 6, 1 silver, 4 bronze, taking total tally to 18

  1. At the in the ongoing Commonwealth Game 2022 in Birmingham, Indian Judoka Tulika Maan helped India to get third medal in Judo as she won silver medal in the women’s 78 kg category. Tulika faced a defeat against Scotland’s Sarah Adlington in the final.
  2. Indian athlete Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in the men’s high jump event. He cleared 2.22m to finish third. This is the first-ever CWG medal for India in high jump.
  3. Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh managed bronze in men’s 109 kg category. He lifted a total of 355 kg ( 192 kg in clean and jerk, 163kg in snatch).
  4. India’s super heavyweight lifter Gurdeep Singh bagged a bronze medal in Men’s 109+ kg category final. He lifted a total of 390 kg (167kg. in snatch, 223 in clean and jerk).
  5. Ace India squash player Saurav Ghosal won bronze in men’s single. He lost to England’s James Willstrop, 11-6, 11-1, 11-4. This is the first ever singles medal for India in squash at the Commonwealth Games.
  6. With the addition of these five medals on Day 6,  comprisin one silver and four bronze, the total medals won by India so far has reached to 18 (5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze).

Obituary

Former Australian boxing world champion Johnny Famechon passes away at 77

  • Former Australian featherweight boxing world champion Johnny Famechon has passed away in after a prolonged illness. He was 77.
  • Famechon was associated with professional boxing for more than 20 years and had a record of 56 wins, which includes 20 by knockout, six draws and five losses.
