PM Modi releases special commemorative Rs 125 coin to mark ISKCON founder’s 125th birth anniversary

  • On September 01, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually released a special commemorative coin of Rs 125 to mark the 125th birth anniversary of ISKCON founder Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
  • In July 1966, Prabhupada founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) commonly known as the ‘Hare Krishna movement’.
  • The  spiritual leader was born as Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, in Calcutta and later came to be known by the honorific A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Snow Leopard and Black Necked Crane declared state animal and bird of Ladakh

  • The Union Territory of Ladakh has declared snow leopard (Panther unica) as the new state animal and black-necked crane (Grus nicricollis) as the new state bird.
  • The notification in this regard was released by Shri Radha Krishna Mathur, Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh on August 31, 2021.
  • The decision was taken keeping in view bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh into separate administrative divisions in 2019.
  • In the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, the black-necked crane and Kashmir stag (Hangul) were the state bird and animal respectively.

J&K LG Manoj Sinha inaugurates ‘Saath’ initiative for women associated with SHGs

  • In Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched a Rural Enterprises Acceleration Programme titled ‘Saath’ for Self Help Group (SHG) women on September 01, 2021.
  • The programme aims to transform the lives of women and make them independent and strong in social and financial aspects, by mentoring the women associated with SHGs and create market linkages of products created by these women.
  • Jammu and Kashmir already has 48000 SHGs, with around four lakh women connected to these SHGs. The J&K administration further aims to create 11000 more SHGs in the coming year.

New Development Bank approves UAE, Uruguay and Bangladesh as a new member

  • The Shanghai based New Development Bank (NDB) has approved United Arab Emirates, Uruguay and Bangladesh as its new member countries.
  • In 2020, the NDB Board of Governors initiated the negotiation to expand its membership. As a result UAE, Uruguay and Bangladesh have been admitted as the first new member countries of the NDB
  • NDB was established by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries in 2015. The bank supports public or private projects through loans, guarantees, equity participation and other financial instruments.

RBI to setup committee on NUE licenses: Head- P. Vasudevan

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will setup a committee to scrutinize applications and give recommendations on New Umbrella Entity (NUE) licenses.
  • The 5 member committee will be headed by Shri. P. Vasudevan.
  • NUEs will establish their own payment infrastructure to compete with National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI).

RBI imposes Rs 25 lakh fine on Axis Bank for flouting KYC norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 25 lakh on Axis Bank for violating certain provisions of know your customer (KYC) norms, on September 01, 2021.
  • RBI had carried out scrutiny during February 2020 and March 2020 in a customer account maintained with the bank, where it was observed that the bank failed to comply with the KYC norms.
  • As a result, the banking regulator issued the notice that Axis Bank did not comply with RBI  – KYC Direction, 2016.

Senior Bureaucrat JB Mohapatra appointed as Chairman of CBDT

  • Senior bureaucrat JB Mohapatra, a 1985-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) office, has been appointed the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) with effect from September 01, 2021.
  • Mohapatra was holding the additional charge of CBDT chairman since May 31, 2021, after the extended tenure of incumbent PC Mody came to an end.
  • Prior to this, he was the member in the board that frames the policy for the Income Tax department.

Pankaj Kumar Singh takes over as new DG of Border Security Force (BSF)

  • Pankaj Kumar Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, has taken charge as the new Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) on August 31, 2021.
  • Prior to this, he was serving as the special DG at the BSF headquarters in Delhi.
  • The 58-year-old Pankaj Singh replaces IPS officer and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Director General (DG) SS Deswal who was holding the additional charge of BSF DG since July 2021.
  • Apart from this, Sanjay Arora, a 1988-batch IPS officers from Tamil Nadu cadre, has taken over as the new DG of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

Winners of 2021 Ramon Magsaysay Award

  • Overall 5 awardess have been selected for the 2021 Ramon Magsaysay Award on August 31, 2021. It is the 63rd edition of the annual award.
  • The award is named after former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and is the highest award given to Asian individuals and organizations who have impacted the Asian region and the world.
  • It is considered as Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
  • The awards will be presented during an event on November 28, 2021, Traditionally, the annual award is presented on August 31 in Manila, which marks the birth anniversary of Ramon Magsaysay.

  • Roberto “Ka Dodoy” Ballon (Philippines) – for conservation of natural resources and help communities improve their income through livelihood programs.
  • Muhammad Amjad Saqib (Pakistan) – for helping people through social entrepreneurship
  • Firdausi Qadri (Bangladesh) – for her commitment in vaccine development that saved millions of lives
  • Steven Muncy (Southeast Asia) – for extending humanitarian and peace-building efforts across borders
  • Watchdoc Indonesia (Indonesia) – for emergent leadership and for using journalism and filmmaking to give voice to the people.

Mexico’s Alejandro Prieto wins Bird Photographer of the Year 2021

  • Mexican photographer Alejandro Prieto has emerged as the winner of the Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY) 2021.
  • He has won for capturing a photograph of a greater roadrunner staring up at the barbed-wire-clad border wall between the USA and Mexico, with what almost looks like a sense of bewilderment. The image has been given the title as ‘Blocked’.
  • The Bird Photographer of the Year comes with a cash prize of £5,000.
  • He was chosen from among 22,000 entries from 73 countries.

Senior Journalist and former Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra passes away at 65

  • Former Rajya Sabha MP and senior journalist Chandan Mitra has passed away . He was 65.
  • Mitra was the Editor and Managing Director of The Pioneer newspaper in New Delhi.
  • Mitra was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha from August 2003 to 2009.
  • In June 2010, Mitra was elected to another term in the Rajya Sabha by BJP from Madhya Pradesh. His term ended in 2016. 
  • In July 2018, he resigned from the BJP and joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Bigg Boss 13 winning veteran television actor Sidharth Shukla passes away at 40

  • Well-known television actor and model Sidharth Shukla, who rose to fame with his role in the hit TV show Balika Vadhu, has passed away after suffering a massive heart attack . He was 40.
  • Sidharth Shukla won season 13 of Bigg Boss in 2019.
  • He made his acting debut with the 2008 TV show Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na, and later appeared on shows including Jaane Pehchaane Se… Ye Ajnabbi, and Love U Zindagi and eventually became a household name with the show Balika Vadhu.
  • Sidharth emerged as the winner of Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7 also.
