Cabinet approves “Mission Karmayogi”- National Programme for Civil Services Capacity Building (NPCSCB)

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved ‘Mission Karmayogi’ a National Programme for Civil Services Capacity Building (NPCSCB).
  • Mission Karmayogi is a unique skill building programme for civil servants across the country to prepare them for the future by making them more creative, constructive, imaginative, innovative, proactive, professional, progressive, energetic, enabling, transparent and technology-enabled.
  • The main objective of this Mission is to build future-ready civil servants with right attitude, skills & knowledge, with focus on competency led capacity building.
  • It calls for setting up of the following institutional framework:
    1. Prime Minister’s Public Human Resources (HR) Council,
    2. Capacity Building Commission.
    3. Special Purpose Vehicle for owning and operating the digital assets and the technological platform for online training,
    4. Coordination Unit headed by the Cabinet Secretary.

Uttar Pradesh Govt to set up exclusive anti-electricity theft police stations in every district

  • The state government of Uttar Pradesh has announced to set up exclusive anti-electricity theft police stations in each of the 75 district of state to address the problem of frequent cases of power theft.
  • Out of the total 75 districts, these police stations have already started functioning in 63 districts..
  • The number of enforcement teams have also been raised from 33 to 88.
  • People can file a case in these stations if there are any irregularities and crimes related to electricity.

Cleanliness campaign ‘Gandagi Bharat Chhodo-MP’ launched by Madhya Pradesh Govt

  • The Madhya Pradesh government had launched a special massive cleanliness campaign titled “Gandgi Bharat Chhodo – Madhya Pradesh” (Free India and Madhya Pradesh from garbage)  from 16 to 30 August 2020 to make the state garbage-free.
  • (Free India and Madhya Pradesh from garbage).
  • The campaign was divided into five themes
    1. Cleanliness Oath,
    2. Continuous reduction in urban waste emissions,
    3. Cleanliness in COVID conditions,
    4. Separation of waste from sources of houses,
    5. Launching a special cleanliness campaign for public places.
  • Over 35 lakh citizens from 378 urban bodies in Madhya Pradesh took part in the campaign.
  • Around 10 thousand Corona Warrior sanitation workers were honoured as a part of the campaign.
  • Awareness programmes were also organized in 7,178 settlements under the campaign.

Pramod Chandra Mody gets six-month extension as CBDT Chairman

  • The tenure of the incumbent Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Pramod Chandra Mody, has been extended for a period of 6-months, by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
  • His tenure was ending on 31 August 2020. This is his second extension.
  • His extended term will be effective from 01 September 2020 to 28 February 2021.
  • PC Mody, a 1982 batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) officer, was appointed as the CBDT chief in February 2019 for six months till August 31, 2019.
  • In August 2019, he was re-appointed on the post for one year, till August 31, 2020.

Mustapha Adib Appointed as new Prime Minister of Lebanon

  • Lebanese diplomat, Mustapha Adib, country’s envoy to Germany, has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Lebanon.
  • The 48-year-old replaces Hassan Diab.
  • Adib received support from 90 of 120 MPs to become the new Prime Minister of Lebanon and to form the government on 31 August 2020
  • He had served as the ambassador of Lebanon to Germany from 2013 to 2020.

Hemant Khatri takes charge as CMD of Hindustan Shipyard

  • Indian Navy (IN) Commodore Hemant Khatri (retd) has taken the charge of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd on 01 September 2020.
  • He succeeds Rear Admiral (IN) LV Sarat Babu holds the position.

Nomura Slashes India’s GDP at -10.8% in 2020-21

  • Nomura has downgraded India’s economic growth rate for current financial year and now expects the GDP to contract by 10.8% in 2020-21.
  • Earlier it had estimated the GDP to contract by 6.1%.

Indian Railways launches remote-controlled medical trolley ‘MEDBOT’ to deliver food, medicines to COVID-19 patients

  • The Indian Railways has developed a remote-controlled medical trolley dubbed as ‘MEDBOT’ to help deliver food and medicines to COVID-19 patients.
  • The trolley has been designed by the Diesel Rail Engine Factory, Varanasi of Indian Railways to be used at its Central Hospital (Kovid Hospital Level-I).
  • Essential items like foodgrains, water, etc. are easily transported to the corona infected patients through this trolley.

ICICI Prudential Life launches AI-powered voice chatbot ‘LiGo’ on Google Assistant

  • The private-sector ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has launched an AI-powered voice chatbot called ‘LiGo’, on Google Assistant to enable its policyholders get their queries addressed by simple voice commands.
  • The LiGo chatbot service has been launched as part of the customer service initiative of the company.
  • The customers can instantly access information regarding their policies by activating ‘Google Assistant’ on their Android smartphones and speaking out their policy number or registered phone number.
  • Presently the assistance will be available in English and nine other Indian languages.

IIT Bombay students launches AI-based Scanning app ‘AIR Scanner’

  • A pair of students at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has developed an AI-based document-scanning app ‘AIR Scanner’, as an alternative to Chinese document scanning app CamScanner.
  • The app has been developed by Rohit Kumar and Kavin Agrawal from the Department of Civil Engineering.
  • AIR Scanner is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) based Reading Assistant and Document Scanner app, which can scan documents as well as read to users who have difficulty in reading English.
  • The document scanned using a mobile camera will be saved in PDF format and will be stored in the device only to ensure complete user security.
