2021 G20 Summit Concludes with Adoption of Rome Declaration
- The 2021 G20 (Group of Twenty) Summit was held in Rome, Italy on October 30 and 31, 2021.
- It was the 16th meeting of G20 group. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
- Moto – People, Planet, and Prosperity
- Agenda – climate change, economic recovery, the pandemic and the global minimum corporate tax rate.
- The summit concluded with the adoption of the Rome Declaration by G20 Leaders.
- The final document committed the G20 members nation leaders to the following:
- providing $100 billion every year from now until 2025 to counter climate change.
- to end international financing for all new coal plants by the end of 2021,
- take action to limit global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
- strengthen the WHO on Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) for Covid-19 vaccines.
- Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi led the Indian delegation at the Summit.
- The Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was India’s G20 sherpa or personal representative of the head of government.
5th edition of ‘Ganga Utsav 2021 – The River Festival’ begins
- The 5th edition of the three day-long Ganga Utsav has been organised from November 01 to 03, 2021 in virtual format
- The “Ganga Utsav 2021 – The River Festival “ will not only celebrate the glory of river Ganga but all the rivers of the country to promote the celebration of ‘Nadi Utsav’ (River Festival).
- The 2021 event has been organised under the leadership of Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
- The annual event is organised by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) jointly with the Ministry of Jal Shakti to mark the anniversary of announcement of River Ganga as the ‘National River’ on November 04, 2008..
- The 2021 celebrations will be part of the 75 years of Independence and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
- On the first day of the festival, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) got registered in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of photos of handwritten notes uploaded on Facebook in an hour.
Sports ministry upgrades three new facilities in Lucknow, Delhi and Chennai as KISCE
- The Ministry of Sports has upgraded three existing sports facilities across the country as the Khelo India Sports Centres of Excellence (KISCE).
- The three new centres are :
- Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Lucknow
- Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi
- Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai
- Now the total number of KISCEs in India has increased to 27 spread across 26 States and Union Territories.

GoI form empowered group of secretaries under Cabinet secretary to review implementation of PM GatiShakti
- Centre has constituted an Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) to review and monitor the mechanism for the development and implementation of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP).
- The Cabinet Secretary will be the Chairperson of 20-member EGoS.
- Head of Logistics Division will be the Member and Convenor.
- The Logistics Division will act as Secretariat to the EGoS for its Terms of Reference (ToRs).

Indian Navy stealth frigate Tushil launched in Kaliningrad, Russia
- The seventh Indian Navy frigate of the P1135.6 class was launched at the Yantar Shipyard at Kaliningrad in Russia on October 28, 2021.
- The ship has been formally named as Tushil, a Sanskrit word which means protector shield.
- The ship has been developed under the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) between India and Russia in 2016 for the construction of four additional P1135.6 class ships for Indian Navy.
- Out of the four ships, two ships of Project 1135.6 ships were to be constructed in Russia and two ships in India at M/s Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
- Tushil will be commissioned into the Indian Navy in mid-2023 followed by its sister ship by the end of 2023.
- The Project 1135.6 class is also called Talwar class and the Talwar class frigates are built by Russia for Indian Navy.
New Zealand names critically endangered native long-tailed bat as Bird of the Year
- The critically endangered New Zealand long-tailed bat has been named as the New Zealand Bird of the Year 2021.
- The long-tailed bat is the only land mammal of New Zealand. It is also known as the long-tailed wattled bat or pekapeka-tou-roa.
- The Bird of the Year competition is organised annually by New Zealand based independent conservation organisation Forest & Bird to raise awareness among the citizens about the native birds of the country.
‘Vax’ selected as Oxford English Dictionary’s 2021 Word of the Year
- ‘Vax’ has been chosen as the word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in 2021.
- Vax derived from the Latin word vacca, which means cow.
- Vax is used as a short form for vaccine and means a substance put into a person’s body to prevent them from getting a disease.
- Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, words related to vaccines saw surge in 2021, including terms like double-vaxxed, unvaxxed and anti-vaxxer.

India and World Bank sign USD 40 million agreement to strengthen health systems in Meghalaya
- The Government of India and the World Bank have inked USD 40 million health project agreement for the state of Meghalaya on October 28, 2021.
- The Meghalaya Health Systems Strengthening Project will improve the quality of health services in the state and strengthen the management and governance capabilities of the state to handle future health emergencies including the COVID-19 pandemic.

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists : 02 November
- The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed annually on 2 November.
- Purpose: to prevent all attacks and violence against journalists and media workers; to ensure accountability, bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies.
- The day was recognized by the UN General Assembly in December 2013.
- The date chosen by the UN marks the death of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, two French journalists killed while reporting in Mali on November 2, 2013..
Obituary
Australian Cricket legend, Alan Davidson, passes away at 92
- The Australian and New South Wales cricket all-rounder Alan Davidson has passed away at the age of 92.
- Davidson was the first player to achieve the feat of scoring 100 runs as well as take 10 wickets in a single Test match.
- The legendary left-arm swing bowler played 44 Tests for Australia in which he claimed 186 wickets and scored 1328 runs.
