National

Government to release special commemorative postage stamp to honour Tricolour designer P Venkayya on 146th birth anniversary

  • August 02, 2022 marks the 146th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of India’s national flag.
  • To mark the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the Government of India will release a special commemorative postage stamp in his honor for his invaluable contribution to the country.
  • The stamp will be released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event “Tiranga Utsav” organised by the Ministry of Culture at Indira Gandhi Stadium, in New Delhi, on the occasion of his 146th Birth Anniversary.
  • The event will also display the original design of the national flag made by Pingali Venkayya. The current flag is the modified version of the first design of the flag.
  • The Tiranga Utsav will also witness the grand launch of the “Har Ghar Tiranga” anthem and video. 
  • Venkayya, born on August 02, 1876, near Machilipatnam town in Andhra Pradesh, was a freedom fighter and a follower of Gandhian principles.

Agreement

India-Maldives ink six pacts during 4-day visit of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to India

  • Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is on a four-day visit to India from August 01, 2022, to further expand ties between the two countries.
  • On August 02, 2022, the two countries inked six agreements to expand cooperation in several key areas which includes cooperation in capacity building, cyber security, housing, disaster management and infrastructure development in the Maldives.
  • PM Modi even announced a Line of Credit of USD 100 million (one million = 10 lakh) for Maldives, for the completion of development projects in a time-bound manner.

Defence

India to participate in 17-nation drill “Pitch Black 2022” in Australia from August 19

  • India will be part of the mega air combat exercise “Pitch Black 2022” among 17-nations, to be held in the Northern Territory of Australia.
  • The three-week-long military exercise Pitch Black is scheduled to take place from August 19 to September 6, 2022.
  • Over 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel from 17 nations will be part of the drill.
  • The exercise is being conducted after a gap of four-years due to Covid. The last edition was held in 2018.
  • The participating countries include the US, India, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the UAE and the UK. 
  • Ex Pitch Black is a biennial multi-national large force employment warfare exercise, hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
  • The objectives for the exercise is to foster closer relationship between the participating forces and promote interoperability through exchange of knowledge and experience.

Award

Indian-American engineering professor Kaushik Rajashekara wins 2022 Global Energy Prize

  • Kaushik Rajashekara, an Indian-origin professor of Engineering at the University of Houston, USA, has won the Global Energy Prize for 2022.
  • Kaushik is among only three people in the world who were selected for the prestigious award in 2022, by the Global Energy Association.
  • He has been given the award for his contributions to transportation electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions.
  • The other two 2022 laureate are:
    • Viktor Orlov – chief specialist of the Centre for Innovative Technologies (Rosatom in Russia) and pioneer in thermonuclear physics
    • Mercouri Kanatzidis professor of chemistry and materials science at Northwestern University and senior researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory.

Appointment

Sashastra Seema Bal DG Sujoy Lal Thaosen gets additional charge as ITBP DG

  • Sujoy Lal Thaosen, the Director General (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), has been given the additional charge as DG Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), with effect from August 01, 2022.
  • Thaosen has taken the charge from former ITBP DG Sanjay Arora who has now been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.
  • Thaosen is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the Madhya Pradesh cadre.

Auguste Tano Kouame of Côte d’Ivoire appointed as Country Director for India by World Bank

  • The World Bank has appointed Côte d’Ivoire national, Auguste Tano Kouame, as the Country Director for India.
  • The term of Auguste is effective from August 01, 2022, for a period of five-years.
  • He replaces Junaid Kamal Ahmad of Bangladesh.
  • Prior to this, Auguste served as the World Bank’s Country Director for the Republic of Turkey.

Book titled “Lion Of The Skies: Hardit Singh Malik” By Stephen Barker

  • A new book titled “Lion of the Skies: Hardit Singh Malik, the Royal Air Force and the First World War” is all about an “India’s first fighter pilot” who participated in the World War, long before the Indian Air Force was born.
  • The book has been written by author Stephen Barker, who describes in great detail, how challenging it was for an Indian to serve in the British armed forces, fighting racial discrimination – both institutional and interpersonal.
  • During the First World War, Hardit Singh Malik served as fighter pilot for both Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) for fighting Germans.
  • He is also the first Indian Ambassador to France.

Book titled “Dangerous Earth” by Marine biologist Ellen Prager 

  • Marine biologist Ellen Prager has come out with a book titled “Dangerous Earth: What we wish we knew about volcanoes, hurricanes, climate change, earthquakes and more”.
  • In the book, the author seeks to respond to the most compelling question: Why can’t we better predict the natural disasters?
  • However, Prager has also concluded that preparation and not prediction of natural events, holds the key to prepare for what lies ahead.

Indian Judokas Likmabam Sushila Devi and Vijay Kumar Yadav wins silver and bronze respectively at 2022 CWG

  • Indian Judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi, helped India in getting its seventh medal the at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as she won the silver medal in the women’s 48kg category.
  • Sushila lost to Michaela Whitebool of South Africa in the final.
  • Meanwhile, another Indian judoka Vijay Kumar Yadav won bronze medal in men’s 60kg judo after he beat Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus.

Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur claims bronze in Women’s 71kg final at 2022 CWG

  • Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur has won a bronze medal in the Women’s 71kg final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games on August 01, 2022.
  • Harjinder claimed the medal after she lifted a total of 212kg (93kg in snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk).
  • With this, total medal tally of India has increased to nine.
  • England’s Sarah Davies won the gold medal with a total of 229 kgs.
  • Canada’s Alexis Ashworth bagged the silver with a total lift of 214kg.
