ICRA Projects India’s GDP at 9% in FY22 and FY23

  • Domestic credit rating agency ICRA Ltd. has projected the real gross domestic product (GDP) of India at 9 percent for fiscal 2022-2023, amid rising Omicron variant of COVID-19 cases in the country.
  • For FY2021-2022 as well, ICRA has maintained its forecast of a 9 percent GDP expansion.

SBI acquires 9.95% stake in India International Clearing Corporation (IICC)

  • India’s largest public-sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI) has announced the acquisition of 9.95 percent stake in India International Clearing Corporation (IICC) Ltd.
  • This 9.95 percent stake will be subjected to a maximum investment of Rs. 34.03 crore.
  • IICC is the first international clearing corporation set up at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City’s International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC).

Prime Minister Modi inaugurates and lays foundation stone of 23 projects worth over Rs 17500 crore in Haldwani

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones of 23 projects worth over Rs 17,500 crore in Haldwani in Uttarakhand on December 30, 2021.
  • PM also announced a new scheme worth Rs. 2,000 crore to be introduced for the overall development of the water, sewage, road, parking, and street lights infrastructure of Haldwani.
  • One of the project whose foundation stone was laid is the Lakhwar Multipurpose Project. This project was first conceived in 1976 and was pending for many years. It is to be built at a cost of about Rs. 5,750 crore. The plant will produce 300 MW hydro power to supply drinking water to the six states which are Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • Apart from this, multiple road projects were also inaugurated or foundation stones were laid, including inauguration of three different stretches of the Chardham all-weather road which have been widened.
  • The foundation stone of AIIMS Rishikesh satellite centre was laid at Udham Singh Nagar and Jagjivan Ram Government Medical College at Pithoragarh.
  • Other foundation stone included Aroma Park at Kashipur and Plastic Industrial Park at Sitarganj
  • Several other projects related to housing, sanitation and drinking water supply across the state were also inaugurated.

UP Govt renames Jhansi Railway station as Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government has renamed the Jhansi Railway Station in Jhansi as ‘Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station’ on December 29, 2021, as a tribute to Rani Laxmibai, the queen of Jhansi.
  • With the renaming the new code of the railway station will be ‘VJLB’.
  • Earlier the code for Jhansi railway station was ‘JHS’.

Egypt added as fourth new member of BRICS New Development Bank 

  • Egypt has been inducted as the fourth new member of the BRICS New Development Bank(NDB) on December 29, 2021.
  • Earlier in September 2021 Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Uruguay were admitted as the new member of the Shanghai-based NDB.
  • The NDB was established by BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) six years ago in July 2015.

Rajeev Ahuja appointed as interim CEO of RBL Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Rajeev Ahuja as Interim Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD&CEO) of the RBL Bank Ltd.
  • Mr. Ahuja has been appointed for a period of three months with effect from December 25, 2021 or till the appointment of a regular MD & CEO, whichever is earlier
  • Prior to this, he was serving as the Executive Director of RBL Bank.

Equitas Small Finance Bank Board approves re-appointment of Vasudevan PN as MD & CEO

  • The Board of Directors of Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited has approved the re-appointment of Vasudevan Pathangi Narasimhan as the MD & CEO of the bank for a further period of three years.
  • However this appointment is subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Shareholders of the Bank.
  • Vasudevan extended tenure will be effective from July 23, 2022, up to July 22, 2025.

V S Pathania Takes Charge As Director General of Indian Coast Guard 

  • Virender Singh (VS) Pathania took charge as the Director-General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on December 31, 2021.
  • He is the 24th Chief of Indian Coast Guard.
  • Pathania replaces K Natarajan, who served as the Chief of the ICG from July 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021.

ITBP DG Sanjay Arora gets additional charge of SSB DG

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has named ITBP Director General (DG) Sanjay Arora to hold the additional charge as DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
  • He has been appointed in place of Kumar Rajesh Chandra, a 1985-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, who had taken over as the SSB DG in January, 2019 and superannuated on December 31, 2021.
  • The Indian Police Service officer, Arora will hold the additional charge of SSB till the appointment and joining of the regular incumbent or untill further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Arora is a 1988-batch officer of Tamil Nadu cadre and serving as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) DG since August 2021.

South Africa’s Quinton de Kock announces retirement from Test cricket

  • The star wicketkeeper-batsman of South Africa, Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on December 30, 2021.
  • The 29-year-old former Test captain, De Kock made his Proteas Test debut against Australia in Gqeberha in 2014.
  • Proteas is South Africa’s national cricket team.
  • He played total 54 test matches played, and scored 3300 runs with highest score of 141 not out, at an average of 38.82 and strike rate of 70.93.
