National

West Bengal to have 7 new districts; total district tally raised to 30

  • The West Bengal Government, led-by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has announced 7 new districts for the state.
  • With the launch of the 7 new districts, the total number of districts in West Bengal has increased to 30. 
  • Earlier there were 23 districts in the state.
  • List of new districts are given below:
    1. Sunderban
    2. Ichhemati
    3. Ranaghat
    4. Bishnupur
    5. Jangipur
    6. Behrampur.
    7. One more district will be named in the Basirhat region.

Centre forms special task force headed by VK Paul, to monitor monkeypox virus cases in India

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has constituted a special task force (STF) to monitor monkeypox cases in India.
  • NITI Aayog member (health) VK Paul will be the head the task force.
  • Other members of the STF will include officials from the Health ministry and representatives of the major medical and research institutes in the country.
  • The STF has been tasked to monitor and provide guidance to the government on the expansion of diagnostic facilities and to explore vaccination for the infection in the country.
  • So far, India has reported four Monkeypox cases, which includes three cases in Kerala and one in Delhi.

International

Zimbabwe launches gold coin as legal tender to tackle inflation and boost currency

  • The central bank of Zimbabwe, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, has announced the launch of gold coins as legal tender, to tackle the situation of increasing inflation in the country, and boost confidence in the local currency..
  • The coin will be called Mosi-oa-Tunya, which refers to Victoria Falls in the local Tonga language.
  • The coins will have liquid asset status, which will make it capable of being easily converted to cash, and will be tradable locally and internationally.
  • The central bank also disbursed 2,000 coins to commercial banks.
  • Any individual or company can buy the coins from authorised outlets such as banks.
  • The decision to launch the gold coin as legal tender was taken by the government to moderate the very high demand for the US dollar, as the high demand is not being matched by supply.

Defence Exercise

S.Korea, the US, Japan holds Multilateral Pacific Dragon missile defence exercise 

  • The biennial Pacific Dragon ballistic missile defense exercise between the military of South Korea, the United States and Japan is being held from August 01 to August 14, 2022 off the coast of Hawaii.
  • Pacific Dragon is basically a trilateral ballistic missile defense (BMD) tracking event between the U.S. Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Republic of Korea Navy.
  • However, apart from the three countries, Canada and Australia is also taking part in the multilateral drill in 2022, which is being led by the US Pacific Fleet .
  • The Pacific Dragon exercise aims to improve interoperability and tactical and technical coordination among participants in detecting, tracking, reporting and assessing ballistic targets. It also aims to enhance the readiness against escalating threats from North Korea.

Achinta Sheuli lifts 313kg in men’s 73kg category to win Gold at 2022 CWG

  • 20-year-old Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli has won the gold medal in the men’s 73kg category by lifting a total of 313kg (143kg 170kg).
  • This is the third gold medal for India and 6th overall at the 2022 Commonwealth Games so far.
  • Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad performed his best effort of 303kg (138kg 165kg) to claim silver.
  • Canada’s Shad Darsigny came third with a total lift of 298kg (135kg 163kg).

England beat Germany to win Euro 2022 at Wembley Stadium

  • England beat Germany, 2-1, after extra time, to win the Euro 2022 trophy in the finals played at the Wembley stadium in London on July 31, 2022.
  • This is for the first time that England team has ever won the European Championships.
  • Also, it is the first major trophy for England after 1966, since the England’s men’s team won the World Cup in 1966.
  • The 2022 UEFA European Women’s Football Championship, or simply Euro 2022, was the 13th edition of the UEFA Women’s Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organised by UEFA for the women’s national teams of Europe.

World Breastfeeding Week 2022: 01 – 07 August

  • The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is marked every year in the first week of August, between 1 to 7 August.
  • The main objective of WBW is to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding for mothers and infants
  • The theme of the World Breastfeeding Week 2022 is “Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support​”.
  • The week is organized by WABA, WHO and UNICEF since 1991.

World Lung Cancer Day: 01 August

  • Every year, the World Lung Cancer Day is observed on August 01 to raise awareness about the causes and treatment of lung cancer and highlight the issues of lack of sufficient research funding for the ailment.
  • The campaign was first organised in 2012 by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) , in collaboration with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and also the American College of Chest Physicians.
  • The IASLC is the largest organisation in the world of its kind that only deals with lung cancer.

Muslim Women’s Rights Day: 01 August

  • In India, the “Muslim Women’s Rights Day” is celebrated across the nation on August 01 to celebrate the enactment of the law against Triple Talaq.
  • The first Muslim Women’s Rights Day was observed in 2020.
  • The Government of India enacted the law against Triple Talaq on August 01, 2019 to make the social malpractice of Triple Talaq a criminal offense.
  • The law is formally called the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
  • It prohibits the practice of instant divorce by Muslim men and any violation of the law is punishable by jail term of up to three years.

Former Philippine Prez Fidel Valdez Ramos passes away at 94

  • Former Philippine President Fidel Valdez Ramos, has passed away due to the complications of COVID-19.. He was 94.
  • Ramos served as the 12th president of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998.
  • He was a military officer by profession.
