Stephen Hillenburg Creator of ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ Passes at 57

  • Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the megahit Nickelodeon cartoon series “SpongeBob SquarePants,” has passes away due to motor neurone disease (also known as ALS). He was 57.
  • ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a rare terminal illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It’s also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
  • Hillenburg not only created the character but also directed the 2004 “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie”.
