Shimla tops NITI Aayog’s inaugural SDG Urban Index and Dashboard 2021–22
- NITI Aayog launched the inaugural SDG Urban Index & Dashboard 2021-22 on November 23, 2021 to further strengthen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) localization and institute robust SDG monitoring at the city level.
- The index is an SDG progress monitoring tool at the ULB level to highlight the strengths and gaps of ULB-level data, monitoring, and reporting systems.
- The SDG Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22 ranks 56 urban areas on 77 SDG indicators across 46 targets of the SDG framework.
- These includes 44 cities with population above one million and 12 State capitals with population less than a million.
- Shimla has topped among the 56 urban areas while Dhanbad in Jharkhand is at the bottom.
- The Index has been developed by Niti Aayog in collaboration with GIZ and BMZ under the umbrella of Indo-German Development Cooperation.
- Based on the composite score, urban areas have been classified as below:
- Aspirant: 0–49
- Performer: 50–64
- Front-Runner: 65–99
- Achiever: 100
