PurposePradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is an ambitious social welfare scheme launched to safeguard the health of women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel (LPG)

Duration – The Scheme would be implemented in three years covering the FY 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Benefits5 Crore LPG connections to be provided to BPL households in the next 3 years, with a financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection to every household covered.

**Note – BPL is a person/ household who suffer from at least one deprivation under the Socio-Economic Caste census (SECC) – 2011 Database.

Basic Features

  • The scheme provides interest free loan for purchasing stove and refill by Oil Marketing Companies
  • Central Government will bear the overall administrative cost of Rs. 1600 per connection, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, booklet, safety hose, etc.
  • The applicant should be a women and above the age of 18.
  • Preference will be given to the beneficiaries from the BPL families belonging to SC/ST and weaker sections of society.
  • Identification of the BPL families will be done through Socio Economic Caste Census Data. 
  • States which have lower LPG coverage as on January 1, 2016, will be preferred for providing new connections to BPL households
  • Connections will be issued in the name of women of the households to ensure women’s empowerment, especially in rural India.
  • Through this scheme women population will not have to compromise their health in smoky kitchens or wander in unsafe areas collecting firewood.

Expansion of beneficiaries list under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

  • In December 2018, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the proposal of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to release deposit free LPG connections to poor families, who have not been considered earlier for release of LPG connections under PMUY on account of their names not been covered either in Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) list or the other seven identified categories.
  • Therefore, poor families who could not get LPG connection under PMUY are now eligible to get a connection subject to fulfilling the eligibility norms and furnishing required documents.
