PM Modi Announces Creation of Chief of Defence Staff

During his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort in New Delhi on August 15, Prime Minister Nareendra Modi has announced the appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who will be the single-point advisor to the government on all military matters.
The post of CDS will be a ‘first among equals’, a fourth four star officer who will be senior to the three other service chiefs and will head all the three arms of the military- the army, navy and air force.
Presently, the senior-most of the three chiefs functions as the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) which functions for the same purpose as CDS.
