Nine New Supreme Court Judges Take Oath, Taking Total Strength to 33

  • For the first time in the history of Indian judiciary, nine new judges, including three women judges, took oath as Supreme Court judges on August 31, 2021, in one go.
  • The Oath of Office and Secrecy was administered by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana.
  • With the swearing-in of the nine new judges, the total strength of the Supreme Court has increased to 33, including the CJI. The total sanctioned strength Supreme Court is 34.
  • The nine new judges are: Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice C T Ravikumar, Justice M M Sundresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi, Justice P S Narasimha.
  • Also, it is for the first time that the the venue of the swearing-in ceremony was shifted to the auditorium of the Supreme Court’s additional building complex, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Traditionally, new judges are administered the oath of office in the CJI’s courtroom.
