International Day for Disaster Reduction: October 13

  • The International Day for Disaster Reduction is held annually on 13 October since 1989.
  • The day celebrates the way that people and communities around the world reduce their exposure to disasters and raise awareness about the risks that they face.
  • The 2018 edition continues as part of the “Sendai Seven” campaign launched in 2016 to encourage the implementation of key frameworks and systems with the goal of saving lives, reducing disaster losses and improving management of disaster risk.
  • This year will focus on Target C of the Sendai Framework which is “Reducing disaster economic losses in relation to global GDP by 2030”.
