  • India has been placed at 122 spot among 181 countries on 2020 Global Youth Development Index, released by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London on August 10, 2021.
  • The triennial rankings of youth development measures the extent to which young people are engaged to contribute beneficially in their societies, and empowered by enabling policies and tools.

Key features of index

  • The index defines youth as people between the ages of 15 and 29.
  • The countries in the index are ranked for youth development across five main domains: levels of education, health and well-being, employment and opportunity, civic participation and political participation.
  • Additionally, the index looks at 27 indicators.
  • The countries are scored between 0.00 (lowest) and 1.00 (highest).
  • The index helps governments to identify specific areas for evidence-based policies and programmes in order to improve youth development and participation.
  • The top five risers in youth development from 2010 to 2018 were Afghanistan, India, Russia, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.
  • Syria, Ukraine, Libya, Jordan and Lebanon showed the least growth in youth development between 2010 and 2018.
