India Placed Among Top 10 Agricultural Produce Exporters of 2019: WTO Report
- India has find place among the top 10 list of the countries exporting agricultural produce in the year 2019, according to a World Trade Organisation (WTO) report on trends in world agricultural trade in recent 25 years.
- The last such report was released in 1995, in which India was not in top 10.
- In the 2019 report, India has outclassed New Zealand to be ranked at 9th spot.
- India’s share in the global agri exports was recorded to be 3.10%, with a sizable share in the export of rice, cotton, soya beans and meat.
Top Three Nations in the List
- The European Union (EU) – 16.1% share (ranked 2nd in 1995)
- The United States – 13.8% share (ranked first in 1995 with 22.2% share)
- Brazil – 7.8% share (ranked third in 1995 with 4.8%)
Category-wise rank of India
- In 2019, India was the largest exporter of rice with 33% of total share, followed by Thailand (20%) and Vietnam (12%) as against Thailand (38%), India (26%), and the US (19%) in 1995.
- Top 10 exporters accounted for more than 96% of exports in both 1995 and 2019.
- Among other categories, India was the third-largest cotton exporter (7.6%) in 2019, but at the same time fourth-largest importer (10%) as well.
- In the category of soya beans, which is the largest traded Agri product in the world, India (0.1%) has a meagre share, but still was ranked 9th globally.
- Further in the “meat and edible meat offal” category, India was 8th largest exporter in the world with a global share of 4%.
- However, India lagged behind as a value-added contributor to world agricultural exports, with its share of international value-added content material in agri-exports being low at 3.8%.
- This was primarily due to high tariffs on Agri imports to boost the domestic markets and local farmers.
