  • The government is setting up National Maritime Heritage Museum at Lothal, a Harappan site on the Saurashtra coast in Gujarat to boost underwater or marine archaeology in India.
  • The Lothal Maritime Heritage Complex is being set up with technical help from the Portuguese Maritime Heritage Museum.
  • The museum project is being implemented by the Union Shipping Ministry under the Sagarmala programme, with the involvement of the Archaeological Survey of India, the Gujarat government and other stakeholders.
  • Lothal has been chosen as it has lots of archaeological remains and was also the centre of maritime activities during the Harappan era.
  • The museum will be an independent research centre of underwater archaeology for reconstruction of maritime history, archaeology of boat building and materials traded.
