Engines Factory Avadi Becomes First Ordnance Factory To Double Manufacturing Capacity of Battle Tanks for Indian Army

  • The Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) in Chennai, has doubled its engine manufacturing capacity of battle tanks for Indian Army’s Main Battle Tanks (MBT) by commissioning a new system called Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS).
  • The new facility was dedicated to the nation by Hari Mohan IOFS, Chairman, Ordnance Factory Board on 21 January 2020.
  • The FMS is expected to more than double the engine production capacity of the plant to 750 per annum, from the earlier capacity of 350 engines per year, to meet the increasing demand of the Indian Army.
  • This makes EFA, the first Ordnance Factory in the country to have FMS system for increasing productivity.
  • The Engine Factory at Avadi is the only unit in the country dedicated to manufacturing fully indigenized engines for the Army’s Main Battle Tanks.
