Delhi AIIMS’ Professor Suresh Chandra Sharma Appointed as First Chief of National Medical Commission
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Professor Suresh Chandra Sharma, head of Delhi AIIMS’ ENT head-neck surgery department, as the Chairman of National Medical Commission (NMC) on 2nd January 2020.
- Besides him, Rakesh Kumar Vats, the Secretary General in the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India, has been appointed as secretary of the commission.
- Both of them have been appointed for a period of three years or till the age of 70 years.
About National Medical Commission (NMC)
- The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the new medical education regulator to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI).
- President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019 on August 8, 2019.
- The MCI has been dissolved after countless allegations of corruption in medical education came up.
- NMC will be responsible for development and regulation of all aspects of medical education, profession and institutions.
- The Commission can have total 33 members including a chairperson, 10 ex-officio members and 22 part-time members as per law.
