Govt notifies new accounting standard (Ind AS 116) on leases; effective from Apr 1

  • The Government of India has notified a new accounting standard Ind AS 116 which aims to bring in more transparency in recognition and disclosures about leases in companies’ balance sheets.
  • Ind AS 116 will be effective from April 01, 2019 and it sets out the principles for recognition, presentation and the disclosure of leases.
  • Ind AS 116 is the equivalent of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) 116.

BoB now India’s third-largest lender as Dena, Vijaya merger becomes effective from April 01

  • From April 01, 2019 all branches of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank will function as branches of Bank of Baroda. The amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda will be effective from April 01, 2019.
  • With this amalgamation, Bank of Baroda will become the third largest bank in the India after State Bank of India and HDFC Bank.
  • The main points to remember from exam point of view regarding this amalgamation is listed below:
    • No. of branches: 9,500 +,
    • No. of ATMs: 13,400 +,
    • No. of employees- 85,000 +
    • Customer base: 12 crore +
  • After the amalgamation, the bank will have a business mix of Rs 15 lakh crore of balance sheet, with deposits and advances of Rs 8.75 lakh crore and Rs 6.25 lakh crore, respectively.
  • According to the Scheme of Amalgamation, shareholders of Vijaya Bank will get 402 equity shares of BoB for every 1,000 shares held, while the shareholders of Dena Bank will get 110 shares of BoB for every 1,000 shares held.

  • ICICI Securities has appointed Vijay Chandok as its MD and CEO with effect from May 07, 2019.
  • Presently Vijay Chandok is the Executive Director of ICICI Bank.

GRSE Becomes First Indian Shipyard To Deliver 100 Warships

  • Kolkata based Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has become the first Indian Shipyard to make and deliver 100 warships to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Mauritius Coast Guard.
  • GRSE formally delivered its 100th Warship, a Landing Craft Utility (LCU), L-56, to the Indian Navy on March 30, 2019.
  • The IN LCU L-56 is the sixth of an order of eight such vessels and was formally hand over by Rear Admiral V. K. Saxena, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE to the Commanding Officer of the Ship, Lt. Cdr. Gopinath Narayanan, Indian Navy.
  • Besides, GRSE had handed over its 99th warship named ‘ICGS Priyadarshini’, an advanced ‘Fast Patrol Vessel’, to the Indian Coast Guard on March 27, 2019.

Kidambi Srikanth Loses to Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in 2019 India Open

  • The former World Number 1, Kidambi Srikanth lost in straight games to former world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open badminton tournament 2019 in New Delhi on March 31, 2019.
  • The 2019 India Open was held at K. D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in India from 26 to 31 March 2019

Zuzana Caputova Elected as First Female President of Slovakia

  • Slovak politician and anti-corruption activist , Zuzana Caputova, has won Slovakia’s presidential election and is set to become the country’s first female head of state.
  • Caputova got over 58 percent of the ballot after results from 91 percent of polling stations were counted.
  •  The 45 year old President-elect of Slovakia is due to take office on 15 June 2019.
  • She will also be the youngest president in the history of Slovakia
