RBI sets WMA Limit for GoI for second half of the Financial Year 2019-20 at Rs 35,000 Crore

  • The Reserve Bank of India has set the limits for Ways and Means Advances (WMA) for the second half of the financial year 2019-20 (October 2019 to March 2020) at Rs 35,000 crore.
  • The Reserve Bank may trigger fresh flotation of market loans when the Government of India utilises 75 per cent of the WMA limit.
  • The interest rate on WMA/overdraft will be:
    • For WMA: Repo Rate
    • For Overdraft: Two percent above the Repo Rate

NITI Aayog Releases First Edition of School Education Quality Index (SEQI)

  • NITI Aayog has developed the School Education Quality Index (SEQI) to evaluate the performance of States and Union Territories (UTs) in the school education sector.
  • The index will provide a platform to States and UTs to identify their strengths and weaknesses and undertake requisite course corrections or policy interventions.
  • Th first edition of the index was released on September 30, 2019 by Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog.
  • The index has grouped States and UTs as Large States (20), Small States (8) and UTs (7).
  • Index is based on 30 indicators.
  • States and UTs are ranked for overall performance in the reference year 2016-17 and annual incremental performance (difference in the overall performance) between the reference year and base year (2015-16).

Top States/UTs in Overall Performance Ranking

  • Large States – Kerala
  • Small States – Manipur
  • Union Territory – Chandigarh

Top States/UTs in Annual Incremental Performance (Between Base Year: 2015-16 and Reference Year: 2016-17

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Presents 28th Saraswati Samman to Dr. K. Siva Reddy in New Delhi

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the 28th Saraswati Samman for the year 2018 to Dr. K. Siva Reddy for his Telugu poetry collection ‘Pakkaki Ottigilite’.
  • He was presented the award during a ceremony organized by the KK Birla Foundation in New Delhi on September 28, 2019.
  • The award is given annually by the New Delhi based  K. K. Birla Foundation since 1991 for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any of the 22 languages of India listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India.
  • First recipient – Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Sandeep Shastri authors book titled “Lal Bahadur Shastri: Politics and Beyond”

  • Political analyst Sandeep Shastri has authored a book on Lal Bahadur Shashtri titled “Lal Bahadur Shastri: Politics and Beyond”.
  • This is to commemorate the 113th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shashtri on October 02, 2019.

Scientist Thanu Padmanabhan awarded M P Birla Memorial Award

  • Noted physicist Thanu Padmanabhan has been awarded the M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology.
  • The MP Birla Memorial Award was introduced in 1993 in recognition to the excellence in research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and related areas.

Kaushal Dharmamer wins Maldives International Challenge (badminton)

  • Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer has won the men’s singles title at the Maldives International Challenge after defeating Siril Verma.
  • Earlier this month, Kaushal Dharmamer had won the men’s singles title at the Myanmar International Series.

Sumit Nagal Wins Men’s Singles Title of ATP Challenger Tournament in Argentina

  • In Tennis, Indian player Sumit Nagal claimed the men’s singles title of ATP Challenger Tournament at Buenos Aires in Argentina on September 23, 2019.
  • The 22-year-old 7th seed from Haryana defeated 8th seed Facundo Bognis of Argentina in straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 to claim the 54,160 US dollars prize money.
  • With this, he has also become the first Indian to win on South American clay court

China Tops Medal Tally in 2019 World Weightlifting Championships Held in Thailand

  • The 2019 IWF World Weightlifting Championships was held in Pattaya, Thailand from 18 to 27 September 2019.
  • China topped the medal table with total 53 medals including 29 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals. It was followed by North Korea (24) and Georgia (7) respectively.
  • Egypt was banned from participating due to doping offenses.
  • The championships also served as qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

International Translation Day: September 30

  • International Translation Day is marked every year on 30 September to celebrate the work of language translation professionals which facilitates dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security.
  • 2019 theme: Translation and Indigenous Languages.
  • The day also marks the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators.
  • The International Federation of Translators (FIT) organise the day ever since it was set up in 1953. First official celebration was held in 1991.

World Deaf Day 2019: September 29

  • Every year, the last week of September is observed as the International Week of the Deaf (IWD). In 2019, it was held from September 23-29.
  • The week ends on the last Sunday of the month of September and that day is celebrated as the World Day of Deaf (September 29, 2019).
  • The theme of 2019 IWD is ‘Sign Language Rights for All!’
  • It aims to draw the attention of affected people and their family members, as well as of general people, politicians and development authorities towards the achievements and challenges of deaf people community.

Veteran Bollywood Actor Viju Khote Who Played ‘Kalia’ in Sholay, Passes Away at 77

  • Well known film and theatre actor Viju Khote, who is popular for his role of Kalia in the iconic film ‘Sholay’, passed away. He was 77.
  • The actor has appeared in over 300 Hindi and Marathi films and numerous television shows and plays.
  • Some of his popular films include Sholay, Andaz Apna Apna, Qurbani, Karz, Nagina and China Gate, among others.

Former Foreign Secretary of India, K P S Menon (Junior) Passes Away at 90

  • Former diplomat K P S Menon (junior), who served as the Foreign Secretary of India from 1987 to 1989, has passed away at the age of 90.
  • Menon was a 1951 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
  • He was the son of K P S (Kumara Padma Sivasankara) Menon (senior), who was the first Foreign Secretary of independent India.

India Successfully Test-fires BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile from Chandipur, Odisha, for its full range of 290-km. The missile is jointly developed by India and Russia.
