M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurates Aqua Aquaria India 2019 in Hyderabad

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 5th Aqua Aquaria India 2019 in Hyderabad. It is India’s International Aquaculture Show.
  • The event was organized by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The event was organised to showcase the recent advances in aquaculture and ornamental fish breeding/ rearing technology for encouraging diversification and promote intensification in a sustainable manner.
  • Theme of the event: ‘taking blue revolution to India’s hinterland’.

Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation launches “Angikaar” campaign

  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has launched a campaign named “angikaar” that aims to bring beneficiaries of PMAY (urban) into the fold of other central schemes such as Ujjawala and Ayushman Bharat.
  • Who will be covered under the scheme: beneficiaries of completed houses under PMAY (U)
  • Aim: for social behaviour change, focusing on issues such as water & energy conservation, waste management, health, tree plantation, sanitation and hygiene of the beneficiary
  • Major Focus: The convergence would especially focus on Ujjwala for gas connection and Ayushman Bharat for health insurance to the beneficiaries of PMAY (U).
  • How will it work: Under PMAY (U) about 88 lakh houses has been approved till now as against demand of 1.12 crore. The angikaar aims at reaching out all the beneficiaries of the Mission in phased manner. The campaign will include door to door activities, ward and city level events.
  • Start and end dates: The campaign will be initiated in all target cities on 2nd October 2019 commemorating 150th Gandhi Jayanti after preparatory phase and culminate on the occasion of Human Rights Day, 10th December, 2019.
  • Apart from this, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs also lauched an e-course on Vulnerability Atlas. Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs – Shri Hardeep S Puri, made these launches. 

Government announces merger of Public Sector Banks to bring down number of PSBs to 12

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the merger of 10 PSU banks to become four major entities. After this, the total number of PSBs will come down to 12 from 24 banks. In 2017, there were 27 PSBs.
  • The details of the merger are given below:
    • Merger 1: Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank will be merged into one entity. It will become the second-largest PSB with a business of Rs 17.95 lakh crore and 11,437 branches. (Anchor Bank- PNB)
    • Merger 2: Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank will be merged into one entity. It will become fourth-largest PSB with a business of Rs 15.2 lakh crore. (Anchor bank- Canara Bank)
    • Merger 3: Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank into one entity. It will become fifth largest PSB. (Anchor bank – Union Bank of India)
    • Merger 4: Indian Bank and Allahabad Bank will merger into one entity. It will become seventh-largest PSB with a business of Rs 8.08 lakh crore. (Anchor bank – Indian Bank)
  • PSBs that will continue as before: Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab and Sindh Bank will continue to operate on their own. It is expected that the remaining PSBs may be merged in the near future.
  • Apart from this the government also announced the Rs 55,250 crore upfront as a capital infusion in the PSBs. In this PNB has got the highest amount of Punjab National Bank — Rs 16,000 crore.
  • All PSU banks will now have a non-executive chairman. Earlier this position was available only in SBI.

RBI increases timeline for conversion of minimum detail PPIs to full KYC PPI to 24 months

  • The Reserve Bank of India has increased the timeline for the conversion of a minimum detail Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) to KYC compliant PPIs from 18 months to 24 months. These 24 months shall be counted from the day of the opening of such a PPI.
  • What is minimum detail PPI: A Prepaid Payment Instrument where the holder has submitted minimum KYC related information like only mobile number and self-declaration of name and the unique identification number is a minimum detail PPI.
  • Limit for minimum details PPI: The amount loaded during any month shall not exceed Rs 10,000/- and the total amount loaded during the financial year shall not exceed Rs 1,00,000/-.

RBI reiterates banks for Cash Withdrawal at Points-of-Sale (PoS) Devices

  • The Reserve Bank of India has reiterated banks to follow the norms regarding cash withdrawals at PoS devices enabled for all debit cards/open-loop prepaid cards issued by banks. As per RBI instructions the limit for cash withdrawal via Points-of-Sale (PoS) Devices is:
    • Rs 1000/- per day in Tier I and Tier II centres
    • Rs 2,000/- per day in Tier III to Tier VI centres
    • Apart from this, customer charges, if any, on such cash withdrawals to not more than 1% of the transaction amount.
  • RBI stated that it has come to the notice of RBI that the instructions regarding this have not been implemented.

Nomura predicts India’s GDP at 6.9% in 2020

  • Global research and brokerage firm Nomura has predicted the GDP growth rate for India for the year 2020 at 6.9%. It has reduced the prediction from earlier 7.1%.
  • The global GDP growth rate for 2020 has been predicted at 3.3% by Nomura.

Dindigul lock and Kandangi Saree of Tamil Nadu Gets GI Tag

  • Dindigul lock and Kandangi saree belonging to the state of Tamil Nadu have been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.
  • The lock is famous across the world for its superior quality and durability while the cotton saree is characterised by large contrast borders.

Haryana CM releases book penned by O P Singh

  • Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar, has released a book written by senior IPS officer O P Singh. The book is titled ‘Jin Dhoondha Tin Paaiyan’.
  • The book covers a wide range of issues including crime, violence, police, sports and social media.

Book titled “Obama: The Call of History” by Peter Baker released

  • A new book on Barack Obama titled “Obama: The Call of History” authored by Peter Baker has been released. Obama is the former President of the US.
  • Peter Baker is the Chief White House Correspondent for The New York Times. 

Abhishek Verma Wins Gold in Men’s 10m Air Pistol at Rio Shooting World Cup

  • Indian shooter Abhishek Verma won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event of the ISSF World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
  • It is the season’s fourth ISSF World Cup for rifle and pistol shooters. 
  • Saurabh Chaudhary took home the bronze while silver medal went to Turkey’s Ismail Keles.
  • Meanwhile, Sanjeev Rajput secured silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.

VK Vismaya Claims Gold in 400m at Czech Republic Athletic Meet

  • Indian sprinter, VK Vismaya won gold medal in women’s 400m at the International Athletic Meeting held at the Josef Seckár Memorial (MJS) in Brno, Czech Republic
  • The 22-year-old finished with her personal best timing of 52.12s.
  • Vismaya beat MR Poovamma and Subha Venkatesan, who finished second and third with timings of 53.47s and 53.67s respectively.
  • The International Day of the Disappeared is held on August 30 each year to draw attention towards increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances of individuals in various regions of the world, including arrest, detention and abduction unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives. 
  • The day was adopted by UN General Assembly on 21 December 2010 and was first observed in 2011.
