Google announces USD 1 million grant to promote news literacy in India

  • Technology giant Google has announced USD 1 million grant to promote news literacy among Indians to avoid spreading of misinformation.
  • The money will be given to Internews, a global non-profit organisation, which will select a team of 250 journalists, fact checkers, academics and NGO workers for the project.
  • A curriculum will be developed by a team of global and local experts, who will roll out the project in seven Indian languages.
  • The local leaders will then roll out the training to new internet users in non-metro cities in India, enabling them to better navigate the internet and assess the information they find.
  • The announcement is a part of Google’s USD 10 million commitment worldwide to media literacy.

Indian Navy Launches Operation ‘Vanilla’ to Provide Disaster Relief at Madagascar due to Cyclone Diane

  • Indian Navy has launched ‘Operation Vanilla’ to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief at Madagascar, post devastation caused by Cyclone Diane.
  • The Navy has deployed its warships INS Airavat to provide all necessary assistance to the affected population of flood-hit Madagascar.

Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad to become World’s Largest Cricket Stadium

  • The Sardar Patel Stadium in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, also known as Motera Stadium, is being redeveloped to emerge as the largest arena for cricket.
  • The new stadium will have a seating capacity of 1,10,000 spectators.
  • It will overtake the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia which is the largest cricket stadium in the world at the moment with a total seating capacity of 100,024 fans.
  • Kolkata’s Eden Gardens is second largest with a capacity of 66,000.
  • The stadium is scheduled to be unveiled in February 2020.

India’s First Underwater Metro in Kolkata to Begin Service in March 2022

  • India’s first underwater metro train which is being constructed in Kolkata is set to begin operations in March 2022.
  • The East-West Metro project constructed by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), will pass partly under the iconic Hooghly river, connecting the twin cities Kolkata and Howrah.
  • The India’s first under water metro project will have 16.6 km route with six stations on the way. It is expected that 9,00,000 people will be travelling by this new line daily.

Important Cabinet Approvals: 29 January 2020

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for:

  • Extension of the existing Productivity Linked Reward (PLR) Scheme for the employees/workers of the Major Port Trust and Dock Labour Board for the period beyond 2017-18 until any change/amendment is made in the Scheme.
  • Official amendments in the National Commission for Homoeopathy Bill, 2019 for amending the Homoeopathy Central Council (HCC) Act, 1973, presently pending in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Official Amendments in the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Bill, 2019 (NCIM) which is pending in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020 to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
  • Allocation of 30 percent of North Eastern Council’s (NEC’s) allocation for new projects under the existing “Schemes of North Eastern Council” for focussed development of deprived areas; deprived/neglected sections of society and emerging priority sectors in the North eastern States.  The balance allocation shall be bifurcated in the existing two components (State component-60% and Central component-40%)

Nepal Sets Guinness World Record for Highest Altitude Fashion Show Event

  • Nepal has created an all new Guinness World Record for the highest altitude fashion show event ever held.
  • The Mount Everest Fashion Runway was held at the 5340 metres (17515 ft) elevation at Kala Patthar, near the Everest base camp on January 26.
  • The event was organized by RB Diamonds and KASA Style in support of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), as a part of the Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign of NTB.
  • The fashion gala aimed to raise awareness about climate change as well as to promote sustainable fashion.

Indian theatre artist Sanjna Kapoor receives French honour

  • Well-known theatre personality Sanjna Kapoor was awarded the French honour of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) on 28 January for her outstanding contribution to theatre.
  • The 52-year-old is the daughter of the Bollywood star Shashi Kapoor and British actor Jennifer Kendal.
  • She received the award in New Delhi from Franck Riester, the French Minister of Culture, who’s currently on an official India visit.
  • The Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters is an honour bestowed on persons for their outstanding contribution to the field of arts and literature, irrespective of their nationality.

Indian Cyclist Esow Alben Wins gold in men’s Keirin individual event of Six Day Berlin Tournament

  • In Cycling, India’s Esow Alben has bagged a gold in the men’s Keirin individual event of the Six Day Berlin Track Cycling Tournament held from 23 to 28 January 2020.
  • The 18-year-old finished on top of the podium after defeating Czech Republic’s Tomas Babek, while Maximilian Lev of Germany won bronze.
  • The Six Days of Berlin is a six-day track cycling race held annually in Berlin, Germany.

Mizoram defeats Sikkim in the North East Dr T Ao Football Trophy 2020

  • The Northeast Dr. T Ao Football Trophy 2020 was held at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland on 28 January 2020.
  • Two times champion Mizoram defeated Sikkim by 1-0 goal to emerge as the champion.
  • Mizoram midfielder David Lalrinmuana scored the lone goal to secure the title for the team.
  • Nagaland defeated Arunachal Pradesh by 4-2 to claim the third position.

Eminent Assamese litterateur Sashi Sarma Passes Away

  • Eminent litterateur, writer, academician and intellectual from Assam Shashi Sarma passed away following ailing health conditions.
  • He was 89.
  • As per Sarma’s wish, his body has been donated posthumously at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for research activities.

Former Women’s Hockey Captain Sunita Chandra Passes Away

  • Former Indian Women’s Hockey Team captain Sunita Chandra passed away. She was 76.
  • Chandra, an Arjuna awardee, played for the Indian women’s hockey team between 1956 to 1966 and served as skipper from 1963 to 1966.
