PM Modi launches ‘Fit India Movement’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a nation-wide ‘Fit India Movement’ at Indira Gandhi Stadium complex in New Delhi on August 29, 2019. It has been launched on National Sports Day.
  • Fit India Movement aims to encourage people to inculcate physical activity and sports in their everyday lives.
  • All educational institutes have been instructed to prepare and implement a fitness plan incorporating sports, exercises or other physical activities for fitness, into the daily routine.
  • Recently government had formed a committee for Fit India Movement with sports minister Kiren Rijiju as its head.

Mumbai ranked 45th in Safe Cities Index 2019; Top- Tokyo

  • The Economist Intelligence Unit has released the Safe Cities Index 2019. Tokyo has topped the list while Mumbai is the top Indian city in the list at 45th rank.
  • The list ranks 60 cities based on 4 parameters which include health security, infrastructure security, digital security and personal security.
  • New Delhi is second Indian city in the list, ranked at 52. Singapore is second, Osaka is third, Amsterdam is fourth and Sydney is ranked fifth.

In a first, ICICI Bank deploys ‘Robotic Arms’ for currency sorting at its chests

  • ICICI Bank has become the first in the country to deploy industrial ‘Robotic Arms’ to count currency notes at its currency chests across the country.
  • ICICI Bank has deployed 14 industrial ‘Robotic Arms’ in 12 cities. It will help sort over six million notes on all working days, or about 1.80 billion notes annually.
  • How the robotic arm works: Each industrial robotic arm feeds unprocessed cash in three high-end note-sorting machines simultaneously, picks up processed cash from the output stackers, aligns the loose notes, binds the packets and finally drops them in the respective trays as per the quality of the note. 

P.C. Mody’s tenure as Chairman of CBDT extended by 1 year

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended the tenure of Pramod Chandra Mody as the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for one year.
  • He was to retire on August 31, 2019. 

Pramod Agarwal to Succeed A K Jha as Chairman of Coal India

  • Pramod Agarwal has been selected as the next Chairman of the state-owned Coal India Limited by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB)
  • He will succeed incumbent Chairman Anil Kumar Jha who will retire in January 2020. 
  • Agarwal is a 1991 batch IAS from Madhya Pradesh cadre currently working as principal secretary for urban development and housing department in Madhya Pradesh.

  • Parthasarathi Mukherjee the MD and CEO of Lakshmi Vilas Bank has announced his resignation citing personal reasons.
  • Lakshmi Vilas Bank is headquartered at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Arunachal Pradesh to Host 25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship

  • The 25th edition of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship will be held in Arunachal Pradesh from September 10 – 24, 2019. 
  • Arunachal Pradesh is hosting the tournament for the first time.
  • It will be held in the oldest town of the state Pasighat in East Siang District of the state. 
  • 30 teams from across the country, representing various States, Union Territories and Indian Railways will participate in the tournament. 

Elavenil Claims World Cup Gold Medal in Women’s 10m Air Rifle at Rio de Janeiro 

  • In shooting, Elavenil Valarivan claimed her maiden senior World Cup gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle competition at 2019 ISSF World Cup, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 
  • With this India has now won three out of the four World Cup gold medals in the women’s 10m air rifle in 2019 ISSF World Cup.

Sri Lankan Cricketer Ajantha Mendis Announces Retirement 

  • Ajantha Mendis, a professional Sri Lankan cricketer has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket at the age of 34. He last played for Sri Lanka in 2015.
  • He was famously known as the “mystery spinner” due to the unusual bowling action and was also regarded as one of the best limited over bowlers in the world arena.
  • Mendis has played 19 Tests, 87 One-Day Internationals and 39 T20Is for Sri Lanka, taking 70 Test wickets, 152 ODI wickets and 66 T20I wickets.

National Sports Day: 29 August

  • India observes the National Sports Day, also called Rashtriya Khel Divas, on 29 August every year to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, regarded as nation’s greatest hockey player of all time.
  • Major Dhyan Chand Singh won Olympics gold medals for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He has scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948.
  • He was popularly known as “The Wizard” for his magical touch, superb control, creativity and extraordinary goal-scoring feats.

International Day against Nuclear Tests: August 29

  • The International Day against Nuclear Tests is held on August 29 since 2010.
  • The day aims to increase awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world
  • It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 2, 2009.

Important Cabinet Approvals: August 28, 2019

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has made the following approvals:
  • Signing of Agreement between India and Peru on Cooperation in the field of Medicinal Plants
  • MoU between India and Gambia on Cooperation in the Field of Traditional Systems of Medicine
  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Republic of Guinea on Cooperation in the Field of Traditional Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy.
  • Establishment of an International Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) along with its supporting Secretariat Office in New Delhi.
  • Establishment of 75 additional Government   Medical   Colleges by 2021-22 attached with existing district/referral hospitals under Phase-III of the ongoing Centrally Sponsored scheme.
  • Providing a lump sum export subsidy @ Rs. 10,448 per Metric Tonne (MT) to sugar mills for the sugar season 2019-20.  The total estimated expenditure of about Rs.6,268 crore will be incurred for this purpose.
  • Amendments/changes in the National Medical Commission Bill, 2019. The changes include:
    • Clause 4(1)(c) –Twenty two part-time Members instead of fourteen members;
    • Clause 4(4)(b) – ten members instead of six members
    • Clause 4(4)(c) – nine members instead of five members
    • Clause 37(2) – added at the end “for the purposes of teaching also”.
