RBI Extends Timings for RTGS Transactions for Customers from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to extend the timings for customer transactions in Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) System by 1.5 hours.
  • The timings for customer transactions (initial cut-off) in RTGS will be extended from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
  • The new timing will be effective from June 1, 2019.
  • Accordingly, the new timing under RTGS time window is as follows
    • Open for Business: 08:00 hours
    • Customer transactions (Initial Cut-off): 18:00 hours
    • Inter-bank transactions (Final Cut-off): 19:45 hours
    • IDL Reversal: 19:45 hours – 20:00 hours
    • End of Day: 20:00 hours

Indian Overseas Bank Launches ‘Bank on Wheels’ Facility

    • The Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has launched a new service named ‘Bank on Wheels’ on May 27, 2019 in its 16 lead districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
    • The ‘Bank on Wheels’ facility has been launched in Kanyakumari, Karur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Virudhunagar and Chennai, besides, Vijayawada and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
    • The mobile van facility will enable the public, especially senior citizens, conveniently get door-step banking facility available at identified locations of the lead districts.
    • Bank on Wheels will have a dedicated Banking correspondent, micro ATM inside the van, to provide services like account opening, enrolment of customers in social security scheme, passbook printing and other financial inclusion activities. 

25 States Miss Deadline to Submit Plastic Disposal Plan; Face Rs 1 cr Penalty

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed all the states and Union Territories (except 4) to submit their respective action plans on systematic disposal of plastic waste in compliance to Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, latest by April 30, 2019, to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
  • In this regard, 25 states have failed to comply to the directions, and now as per NGT’s order, each state would have to pay the pollution body a compensation at the rate of Rs one crore per month.
  • Except for Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal and Puducherry, all the remaining states/UTs and SPCBs (state pollution control boards) will need to face the punishment, which not just includes compensation but imprisonment too, in some cases.

India Elected To Executive Board Of First UN-Habitat Assembly

  • The first session of the UN-Habitat Assembly will be held from 27-31 May 2019 at UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • The special theme for the UN-Habitat Assembly is: “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”.  
  • India has been elected to the Executive Board of the first UN-Habitat Assembly on May 27, 2019.
  • The Executive Board of UN-Habitat will be responsible to review and approve the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025 and the Progress in implementation of New Urban Agenda, among other things.

Peter Mutharika Re-Elected as President of Malawi for Second Term

  • The President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika has been elected to a second term in office as president after winning the 2019 elections with 38.57% of the vote.
  • The 78-year-old Peter Mutharika is the leader of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Lokpal Launches its Logo and Motto Competition

  • The newly formed anti-corruption ombudsman, Lokpal, has launched a competition for its logo and motto.
  • Of the total entries for the competition, the winner will get cash prize of Rs 25,000.
  • All entries will be evaluated by a selection committee constituted by the Lokpal.

Important Terms & Conditions of the Competition

  • Last date for sending entries – June 13, 2019
  • Motto/slogan should be catchy and should not be more than four-five words.
  • Language for the motto/slogan could be Hindi/ Sanskrit/ English.

India’s First Tree Ambulance to Save Trees Flagged Off in Chennai

  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu flagged off a unique service called ‘Tree Ambulance’ in Chennai to revive and provide care to trees, following Cyclones Vardah (2016) and Gaja (2018) which uprooted lakhs of trees in the state.
  • The Tree Ambulance service has been founded by, Dr K Abdul Ghani, also known as Green man of India.
  • The service includes providing first aid treatment to trees, uprooted tree planting, seed bank, seed ball distribution, plant distribution, aiding tree plantation, shifting trees, survey of trees and removal of dead trees.

India’s Global Rank in Mobile Speeds Falls to 121 While Norway Tops: Ookla

  • With an average download speed of 10.71 mbps, the global ranking of India’s mobile internet speeds has decreased to 121 in April 2019 as compared to 112 in May 2018.
  • This report is released by Ookla, the US based company behind Speedtest in its Speedtest Global Index for April 2019.
  • Also, India’s global rank in fixed broadband speed slipped from 67 at the beginning of 2018 to 68 in April 2019 with average download speeds of 29.25 mbps.
  • In terms of mobile internet speed, Norway is at the top position globally with an average download speed of 65.41 Mbps. 
  • Singapore has topped the global rank for fixed broadband speed with an average download speed of 197.50 Mbps

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh Included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites

  • The heritage town of Orchha in Madhya Pradesh has been included in the tentative list of UNESCO world heritage sites, following the proposal sent by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to the UNESCO on April 15, 2019.
  • The rules says that, to be a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites, the site first has to be included on the tentative list and after that another proposal is sent to the UNESCO.
  • Situated on the banks of the Betwa river, the architectural heritage of Orchha town depict peculiar style of the Bundela dynasty. 

Second Phase of Indian French Naval Exercise Varuna 19.2 Concludes in Djibouti

  • The second part of the Indo-French naval exercise, christened as Varuna 19.2 was held from 22nd to 25th May 2019 in Djibouti.
  • The first part of the exercise, Varuna 19.1 was held off the Goa coast from 1st to 10th May 19.
  • The harbour phase of the exercise at Goa included professional interactions and discussions while the sea phase in Djibouti comprised various drills across the spectrum of maritime operations.

Russia Launches Nuclear Powered Ice Breakers to Tap Arctic Potential

  • Russia’s nuclear energy agency, Rosatom has come up with the nuclear-powered ice breaker name as Ural, on May 25, 2019 at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg.
  • Ural is the third of the new LK-60Ya class of nuclear-powered ice-breakers. The first two are Arktika and Sibir.
  • Arktika is expected to enter operation in 2020, Sibir in 2021 and Ural in 2022.
  • These Vessels are part of the ambitious project 22220 of Russia, to renew and expand its fleet of the vessels to improve its ability to tap the Arctic’s commercial potential
  • Once the deployment of the trio gets completed, it will be the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world.

Statue of Unity Enters 2019 World Architecture News Awards

  • The world’s tallest statue, Statue of Unity, in Gujarat, constructed by Larsen & Toubro, has entered the globally-acclaimed 2019 World Architecture News (WAN) Awards.
  • The WAN Awards showcase the best international design in current and future projects and recognise the outstanding works of innovative, visionary and imaginative architects worldwide.
  • The statue has been designed by Maharashtra’s legendary architect Ram V Sutar.

Guy Gunaratne Wins 2019 Dylan Thomas Prize for His Novel ‘In Our Mad and Furious City’

  • The British-Sri Lankan writer and human-rights documentary film-maker, Guy Gunaratne, has won the £30,000 Swansea University International Dylan Thomas Prize 2019 for his debut novel In Our Mad and Furious City.
  • The 34-year-old beat five other shortlisted authors to win the world’s largest English language literary prize for young authors under 39 years of age.

International Day of Action for Women’s Health: May 28

  • The International Day of Action for Women’s Health or International Women’s Health Day is observed every year on May 28 since 1987 to raise awareness on the issues related to women’s health and well being such as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
  • Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) and Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) launched the day.

Former PM of Thailand Prem Tinsulanonda Passes Away

  • Prem Tinsulanonda, a military officer, politician and former Prime Minister of Thailand, passed away. He was 98.
  • He had served as Prime Minister of Thailand from 3 March 1980 to 4 August 1988 and was the longest-living Thai Prime Minister at the age of 98.
