2019 G20 Summit Begins in Osaka, Japan

  • The 2019 G-20 Summit, kicked off in Japan’s Osaka from June 28-29, 2019. It is the first G20 summit to be hosted in Japan.
  • The theme of the 14th edition of the summit is Human-centred future society.
  • 19 countries, the European Union and several special invitees are participating at the Osaka Summit. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is representing India in the two days G20 Summit 2019. 
  • India will be hosting the G20 Summit for the first time in 2022 marking 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.

First World Youth Conference on Kindness to be held in New Delhi

  • UNESCO MGIEP is organising the first World Youth Conference on Kindness in New Delhi from August 20-23 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The theme of the event is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: Gandhi for the Contemporary World: Celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.’
  • O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) and Delhi-based UNESCO MGIEP (Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development) have partnered for this event.

Conclave on ‘Transforming North East India through Science and Technology’ Begins in Meghalaya

  • The two-day North East Conclave 2019 on ‘Transforming North East India through Science and Technology’ began at Shillong, Meghalaya on June 28, 2019.
  • The conclave has been organised by the Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD).
  • The various themes of the conclave are:
    • Creating job opportunities in NE and Citizen Science programme
    • Health, Nutrition and Bioresources for prosperity
    • Infrastructure and Human Resources Development
    • Biodiversity conservation, Traditional Knowledge Systems and Natural Resource
      Management
    • Role of Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises (MSME) in transforming North East

Maharashtra ranks on top with 3,661 startups: DPIIT Data

  • As per data available with Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) the state of Maharashtra leads in the number of startups in India, with 3661 startups.
  • Karnataka is on the second rank with 2847 startups. 

Mumbai Among Top 20 Most Expensive Cities in Asia for Expatriates: Mercer

  • According to Mercer’s 25th Annual Cost of Living Survey, Mumbai has emerged as India’s most expensive city and is also included among the top 20 costliest cities in Asia for expatriates.
  • Globally, Mumbai has been ranked at the 67th position out of the 209 cities surveyed. 
  • Other Indian cities in the list include New Delhi at 118th place, Chennai (154), Bengaluru (179) and Kolkata (189).
  • Hong Kong was ranked the costliest city in the world for the second consecutive year. It was followed by Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul.
  • Tunis (209), Tashkent (208), and Karachi (207) are the lowest ranking cities in the list and least expensive cities for expatriates.

Ministry of Shipping Signs Agreement With IIT Kharagpur to Set up Centre for Inland and Coastal Maritime Technology 

  • The Ministry of Shipping has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with IIT Kharagpur for setting up the Centre for Inland and Coastal Maritime Technology (CICMT) at IIT Kharagpur.
  • The state-of-the-art centre is being set up the under the flagship Sagarmala Programme.
  • It is a first of its kind centre in India that will act as a hub for latest technology tools for maritime sector and reduce India’s dependence on foreign institutions.

Ahmedabad And Japan’s Kobe Exchange LoI for Sister City Partnership

  • Ahmedabad and Japanese city of Kobe has exchanged a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a sister city partnership.
  • It was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 27, 2019 in Kobe.
  • The MoU will pave the way for an enhanced economic relationship between the two vibrant cities as well as the two countries.

RBI develops portal FLAIR for reporting of Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA)

  • The Reserve Bank of India has developed a portal Foreign Liabilities and Assets Information Reporting (FLAIR) system (https://flair.rbi.org.in) for Indian companies to report the Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA).
  • RBI mandates that all Indian companies which have received FDI and/or made FDI abroad (i.e. overseas investment) in the previous year(s) including the current year, should file the annual return on Foreign Liabilities and Assets (FLA). Earlier this was reported via e-mail to RBI.
  • Now the reporting will be done by companies via the FLAIR portal of RBI. The reporting is done on July 15th of each year.

RBI opens third office of the Ombudsman at New Delhi; Total Banking Ombudsman now 22

  • The Reserve Bank has set up a third office of the Banking Ombudsman (BO) and Ombudsman for Digital Transactions (ODT) at Reserve Bank of India, New Delhi. It will officially be opened on July 01, 2019
  • This has been done to meet the growing demand for resolution under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme and the OSDT. The three Offices will look into cases of different areas.
  • With this now the number of Banking Ombudsman Office in India is 22.

Power Ministry forms 3 member dispute resolution committee for clean energy projects

  • The Power Minister has formed a dispute resolution committee to resolve unforeseen disputes between renewable energy players and government agencies.
  • It has three members: MF Farooqui (former DOT Secretary/ Heavy Industry Secretary), Anil Swarup (former Coal Secretary/School Education Secretary) and A K Dubey (former Sports Secretary).
  • The committee will address disputes between the solar/wind power developers and the Solar Energy Corporation of India/NTPC.

PB Acharya Sworn in as Governor of Manipur

  • Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya has been sworn in as the Governor of Manipur on June 27, 2019.
  • PB Acharya is also the incumbent Governor of Nagaland.
  • He has been given the additional charge of Manipur Governor during the absence of Dr Najma Heptulla who is on leave for a month. 

India’s Priya Serrao Crowned Miss Universe Australia

  • India born 26-year-old Priya Serrao has won the Miss Universe Australia title for 2019.
  • She surpassed 26 other women from across the country to win the title. Serrao will now represent Australia in the Miss Universe 2019 competition.
  • Western Australia’s Bella Kasimba and Victorian Marijana Radmanovic were placed second and third respectively

Virat Kohli becomes fastest cricketer to reach 20,000 international runs

  • India cricket captain Virat Kohli on June 27, 2019 became the fastest batsman to reach 20,000 international runs. He took 417 innings to achieve this feat. He made it against West Indies.
  • He broke the joint record of Sachin Tendulkar and Brain Lara, both of whom took 453 innings to reach 20,000 runs.
  • Kohli became the 12th batsman and third Indian after Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to reach 20,000 international runs.

Famous Freedom Fighter Mohammed Baji Passes Away

Eminent freedom fighter and Gandhian activist Mohammed Baji passed away. He was 103.
