Important Cabinet Approvals: November 27, 2019

The following proposals and MoU were approved during the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on November 27, 2019:

  • MoUs approved
    • Myanmar – bilateral cooperation for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons; Rescue, Recovery, Repatriation and Re-integration of victims of Trafficking.
    • Saudi Arabia – Establishment of Strategic Partnership Council
    • Saudi Arabia – combating illicit trafficking and smuggling of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Chemical Precursors.
    • Chile – signing of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and Protocol for the elimination of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion and avoidance with respect to taxes on income.
  • Proposals approved
    • Increase the authorized capital of Food Corporation of India (FCI) from existing Rs.3,500 crore to Rs.10,000 crore.
    • Approved the negotiating stand of India at the 25th Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) scheduled to be held in Madrid, Spain (under the Presidency of Chile) from 2-13 December 2019.
    • Approved the Fifteenth Finance Commission to submit first report for the first fiscal year viz. 2020-21 and to extend the tenure of XV-FC to provide for the presentation of the final report covering FYs 2021-22 to 2025-26 by 30th October, 2020.
    • Allotment of 1800 sqm of Airports Authority of India’s (AAI’s) land to Andhra Pradesh Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (APEWIDC) for the construction of Ceremonial Lounge at Tirupati Airport.
    • Mandatory packaging of foodgrains and sugar in jute material for the Jute Year 2019-20.
    • Waiver of repayment of loan of Rs.54 lakh and interest thereon, amounting to Rs.370.40 lakh, totalling Rs. 424.40 lakh plus the amount of interest that will accrue on total amount, from 01.04.2019 till this approval outstanding against the Sikkim Mining Corporation.

Uttar Pradesh Govt to set up its First vulture conservation and breeding centre in Maharajganj district

  • The government of Uttar Pradesh has taken a major step to conserve the endangered vulture population, and therefore, has decided to set up a vulture conservation and breeding centre in Pharenda area of Maharajganj district in the state.
  • It will be the first vulture conservation and breeding centre of its kind in the state.
  • The centre will be set up on the lines of Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre at Pinjore in Haryana, which is also the first of its kind in India.

India Ratings projects India’s GDP growth for FY20 at 5.6%

  • Fitch group firm India Ratings and Research has projected India’s GDP Growth rate for FY20 (2019-20) at 5.6%. Earlier this prediction was 6.1%.
  • The new projection suggests that 2QFY20 (second quarter of 2019-20) GDP growth is likely to be 4.7 percent.

Christopher Paolini’s first science fiction novel titled “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars” to be out soon

  • Bestselling American author Christopher Paolini will come up with his first science fiction novel titled “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars” will be released in 2020.
  • It will be published by Pan Macmillan.

CII bestows India’s first Quality Ratna award on Chairman of Sundram Fasteners’, Mr Suresh Krishna

  • The Chairman of Sundram Fasteners Ltd Suresh Krishna has been awarded the ‘Quality Ratna’ award by trade body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
  • The award was given by the CII Institute of Quality during its 27th Quality Summit held in Bengaluru.
  • The Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D.V. Sadananda Gowda presented the award to Mr. Krishna.

Indian Journalist Neha Dixit Awarded with 2019 International Press Freedom Awards

  • Indian journalist Neha Dixit is one of several recipients of the 2019 International Press Freedom Awards.
  • Ms. Dixit is a Delhi-based journalist who reports on politics, social justice and gender in South Asia.
  • The award is presented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a non-profit organization whose aim is to enable journalists to work without the fear of reprisal.
  • Other winners include:
    • Patrícia Campos Mello – Brazil
    • Lucía Pineda Ubau and Miguel Mora – Nicaragua
    • Maxence Melo Mubyazi – Tanzania

Rajasthan Writer Manisha Kulshreshtha Wins 28th Bihari Puraskar

  • Rajasthan based noted writer Manisha Kulshreshtha has been awarded the 28th Bihari Puraskar for 2018 for her novel ‘Swapnapash’.
  • The award is presented annually to writers of Rajasthani origin by the KK Birla Foundation for their outstanding work in Hindi or Rajasthani published in the past 10 years.
  • It is named after famous Hindi poet Bihari (Bihari Lal Chaube), and carries a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh, a citation, and a plaque.

American singer Billie Eilish named Billboard’s 2019 Woman of the Year; Taylor Swift named inaugural ‘Woman of the Decade’ award.

  • The famous American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish has been named as Billboard’s 2019 Woman of the Year.
  • She is the youngest artist ever to be named Billboard’s Woman of the Year.
  • Apart from this, pop star Taylor Swift will also be honoured with the inaugural ‘Woman of the Decade’ award.
  • She will be honored for being “one of the most accomplished musical artists of all time over the course of the 2010s”
  • Both of them will receive the award on December 12, 2019 at the Billboard Women in Music event in Los Angeles.

Odia Weightlifter Jhili Dalabehera Bags Prestigious Ekalabya Puraskar 2019

  • Odisha-based globally acclaimed weightlifter Jhilli Dalabehera has been named for the prestigious Ekalabya Award 2019.
  • Jhilli Dalabehera has won two gold, three silver and one bronze medals in international weightlifting events between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2019 to emerge as the clear winner for the 27th Ekalabya Award.
  • The annual award is instituted by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) and comprises a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation.
  • it is presented to encourage and inspire young sportspersons to perform at national and international arena.

Cartoonist Sudhir Dhar passes away at 87

  • Renowned cartoonist Sudhir Dhar passed away at the age of 87 years.
  • He had worked with several newspapers in his career spanning 58 years. Dhar began his career with The Statesman in 1961 after which he moved to Hindustan Times.
  • Cartoons by Sudhir Dhar have also appeared in The Independent, The Pioneer, Delhi Times, New York Times, Washington Post and Saturday Review among others.
