Government Plans to Merge NSSO & CSO into NSO to Strengthen Statistical System

  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has decided to merge the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) to form a new body called National Statistical Office (NSO).
  • NSO would be headed by Secretary Statistics and Programme Implementation. 
  • NSSO is responsible to release various sample surveys such as on consumption expenditure, employment and unemployment, while the CSO releases various data such as GDP and IIP.
  • Combining both the entity will streamline and strengthen the statistical system of the country as well as avoid duplication of work.
  • The CSO and the NSSO both are the organs of the MoSPI.

Apurvi Chandela Wins Gold in 10m Air Rifle at ISSF Munich World Cup

  • Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela beat Wang Luyao of China to win gold in women’s 10m air rifle event of the ISSF World Cup in Munich on May 25, 2019.
  • This was the second gold medal of the season won by Apurvi. She had won her first gold in ISSF Delhi World Cup 2019.
  • Munich World Cup is the third in the series of 5 tournaments of 2019 ISSF World Cup with the last two held in Delhi and Beijing respectively.

Mahesh Mangaonkar wins Sekisui Open Squash Tournament

  • Professional Indian Squash player Mahesh Mangaonkar has defeated Spain’s Bernat Jaume to clinch the 2019 Sekisui Open title in Kriens, Switzerland on May 25, 2019.
  • This is his second Sekisui Open title and eighth PSA (Professional Squash Association (PSA)) title.
  • He had won this title for the first time in 2016.

China Defeats Japan to Claim 2019 Sudirman Cup

  • China beat Japan in the 16th edition of the Sudirman Cup 2019 in Nanning, China by 3-0 to win the tournament.
  • They beat Japan in men’s doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles to clinch the title for an 11th time.
  • In Men’ singles, Shi Yuqi beat world champion Kento Momota  15-21, 21-5,21-11.

Indian Badminton President Himanta Elected as Vice President of BAC

  • The Badminton Asia Council (BAC) has elected the President of Badminton Association of India (BAI), Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the Vice-President of BAC.
  • The 50-year-old received 35 votes from a total of 40 polled to be appointed to the post in the continental committee.
  • BAI secretary (tournaments) Omar Rashid has been elected as the deputy chairman of Badminton Asia’s development committee while Sudhakar Vemuri will assume charge as deputy chairman of BAC technical committee.
  • BAC President – Anton Subowo.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill Resigns

  • The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill, has resigned from the post. 
  • The 54-year-old Mr O’Neill had been the prime minister for seven years.
  • He has handed over the leadership responsibility to Sir Julius Chan, who would now serve on the post for third term.
  • Chan, 79, was the former prime minister of Papua New Guinea from 1980 to 1982 and then again from 1994 to 1997.

  • Acharya Balkrishna, the Managing Director of Patanjali Ayurved Limited has received the prestigious ‘UNSDG 10 Most Influential People in Healthcare Award’ on behalf of Patanjali Group of Institutions in Geneva on May 25, 2019.

Indian Police Officer Jitendra Kumar posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold medal by UN

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has honoured an Indian police officer Jitendra Kumar posthumously the Dag Hammarskjold medal.
  • Jitendra Kumar is among the 119 men and women to be awarded the medal for their courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
  • He was honoured with a prestigious medal for sacrificing his life during the world body’s peacekeeping mission in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. India’s envoy to the UN Syed Akbaruddin received the award on his behalf.

Odisha’s First Woman Mountaineer Kalpana Dash Passes Away

  • Odisha based mountaineer Kalpana Dash passed away in an unfortunate incident while descending world’s highest peak, the Mt. Everest on May 23.
  • She was the first Odia mountaineer to scale Mount Everest in 2008.

World Thyroid Day 2019: May 25

  • The World Thyroid Day is celebrated every year on May 25 to promote awareness and understanding of thyroid health and the advances made in treating thyroid diseases.
  • The World Thyroid Day was established in 2008 by the European Thyroid Association and the American Thyroid Association.
