PM Modi Declares September 2019 as Month of Nutrition

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated the month of September 2019 to Poshan Abhiyaan across the country and announced to celebrate September as a Month of Nutrition.
  • The announcement was made by PM Modi during his Mann Ki Baat programme which laid emphasis on creating awareness to fight malnutrition among children, particularly the girl child.
  • In addition, a nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva campaign to make plastic free India on will be organised on 11th September.

National Centre for Avian Ecotoxicology Inaugurated in Coimbatore

  • The Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated a National Centre for Avian Ecotoxicology at Salim Ali Centre for Ornithlogy and Natural Sciences (SACON) in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
  • SACON is the only institute in India which does ecotoxicological research, focusing on birds.
  • The Ministry has funded an estimated amount of Rs 4 crore for modernising the facility at SACON.
  • The centre would study the impact of chemical contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, poly chlorinated biphenyls and drugs through food chain, and their harmful effects on individual species of birds and, where possible, link them to population and communities.

India’s first FinTech centre of excellence comes up in Chennai

  • Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has set up a ‘Centre of Excellence in FinTech’ in Chennai. It is first of its kind in India and is named ‘FinBlue’.
  • It aims to provide resources in terms of mentoring, technical support and funding for FinTech startups. The centre intends to incubate over 58 startups in the next five years.

IIT-Delhi establishes waste-to-wealth centre (DESMI Centre)

  • Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has partnered with Denmark-based firm to start DESMI Centre of Excellence on Waste-to-Wealth at IIT-Delhi.
  • The objective of the center is to remove floating debris from drains like Babarpur, Barapullah and other water bodies in the Capital and generate resource from the mixed waste feedstock.

RBI to transfer Rs 1,76,051 crore to the Government

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to transfer a sum of Rs 1,76,051 crore to the Government of India. 
  • This comprises of Rs 1,23,414 crore of surplus for the year 2018-19 and Rs 52,637 crore of excess provisions identified as per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF). 
  • The decision has been taken as per the recommendation of the Expert Committee to Review the Extant Economic Capital Framework of the Reserve Bank of India (Chairman: Dr. Bimal Jalan).

Alphalogic Techsys floats India’s first startup IPO

  • Alphalogic Techsys became the first enterprise to float India’s first startup IPO. It is a Pune based boutique software consulting firm.
  • The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Rs 6.18 crore of Alphalogic Techsys is open for bidding today from August 26, 2019 at a fixed price of Rs. 84 per equity share. The issue will close on August 28, 2019.
  • The company is the first company to be listed on BSE Start-up platform. The BSE Startups was launched in December 2018.

Rajasthan Tops Free Medicine Supply Scheme: NHM

  • Rajasthan has topped the list of states in states of the country in implementation of free medicine scheme issued by the National Health Mission (NHM).
  • NHM mission director Manoj Jhalani has issued a letter to health department informing that Rajasthan has been ranked first amongst 16 states of the country in implementation of free medicine scheme 

2019 Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) Conference to be held in Bangkok

  • The 2019 Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) Conference would be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme of the event is ‘Collaboration in a free and Open Indo–Pacific.’
  • India will be represented by Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee who is on 3 days visit to Bangkok from August 26-28, 2019.
  • The Chiefs of Defence of more than 33 countries are scheduled to attend the conference.

India and France partners to build the world’s first space-based ship automatic identification system

  • India and France have partnered to create the world’s first space-based automatic identification system (AIS) to track merchant ships on a real-time basis.
  • K Sivan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of France’s Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales have signed an agreement to start development and production of a constellation of satellites for the ship tracking project, which will potentially revolutionize shipping.

Alex Rins wins MotoGP British Grand Prix

  • Alex Rins of Spain and who rides for SUZUKI has won the MotoGP British Grand Prix 2019 by defeating Marc Marquez by 0.013 seconds.
  • Maverick Vinales of Spain finished with the third position. The racing event was held at the Silverstone racetrack, in Silverstone, England.

Komalika Bari wins World Archery Youth Championships

  • Seventeen years old Komalika Bari from India has won the Gold Medal in 2019 World Archery Youth Championships by defeating Japan’s Waka Sonoda in recurve cadet women’s final.
  • She is only the third Indian archer to hold a world title. She is the second Indian archer to become world champion in the Under-18 recurve women’s category.
  • Apart from this The Indian junior (U-21) compound mixed team of Markoo Raginee and Sukhbeer Singh won Gold Medal at World Archery Youth Championships.
