CBDT task force gets 2-month extension to draft new direct tax code till July 31

  • Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) task force has been given an extension of two months to draft a new Direct Tax Code from May 31, 2019 to July 31, 2019.
  • The new Direct Tax code will simplify complex income tax laws. The extension was given by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
  • Also senior citizens with a taxable income of up to Rs 5 lakh can now submit Form 15H to claim exemption from TDS on interest income on deposits in banks and post offices. Earlier, the limit for seeking TDS exemption was Rs 2.5 lakh. 

Corporation Bank launches ‘Corp SME Suvidha’ for MSMEs

  • Corporation Bank has launched ‘Corp SME Suvidha’, a product for GST-registered MSMEs.
  • The product has been designed as part of the bank’s efforts to provide the best products to MSME.

WHO Unveils Plan To Tackle Global Snakebite “Emergency”

  • The World Health Organization has unveiled a new strategy to deal with deaths and injuries from snakebites
  • As per the UN agency, any scarcity in antivenoms could soon spark a “public health emergency”.
  • The key guidelines proposed in the strategy includes:
    • Cutting snakebite-related deaths and disabilities by 50% by 2030.
    • Restoration of a sustainable market for snakebite treatment
    • Need for a 25-percent increase in the number of competent antivenom manufacturers by 2030
    • Unveil pilot project to create a global antivenom stockpile

2019 Urban 20 Mayors Summit Held in Tokyo

  • The 2019 Urban 20 Summit was hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, led by Governor Yuriko Koike from 21-22 May 2019.
  • The Urban 20 Mayors Summit takes place one month ahead of the G20 Summit. 
  • The U20 cities convey their joint recommendations in a form of a Communique, to the G20 Chair, to be presented to the G20 Leaders during the Summit.
  • The 2019 G20 Summit will be the fourteenth meeting of Group of Twenty and will be held on 28–29 June 2019 in Osaka, Japan.
  • It will be the first-ever G20 summit to be hosted in Japan.

Shailesh Tinaikar to head UN peacekeeping in South Sudan

  • Shailesh Tinaikar of India has been appointed the commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This is the second biggest peacekeeping operation.
  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the announcement regarding his appointment. Shailesh will succeed Lieutenant General Frank Kamanzi of Rwanda.
  • Tinaikar will command over 16,000 peacekeepers, about 2,400 from India, in UNMISS.

SpaceX Launches First Batch of 60 Starlink Internet Satellites on Falcon 9

  • Elon Musk owned private rocket company, SpaceX, successfully launched the first batch of 60 small satellites into low-Earth orbit on May 23, 2019 using Falcon 9 rocket under its new Starlink internet services project for “global broadband” system.
  • Starlink has been designed to provide reliable and affordable high-speed broadband services around the globe.
  • SpaceX intends to launch around 12,000 of the Starlink units in orbit by the mid-2020s to enable internet connections capable of up to 1Gbps even in rural areas.

Priyanka Mohite Becomes First Indian Woman to Scale World’s 5th Highest Mountain Mount Makalu

  • A mountaineer from Satara, Maharashtra, Priyanka Mohite, has become the first Indian woman to successfully scale Mount Makalu.
  • It is the fifth-highest mountain in the world with a height of 8,481 metres.
  • Mt Makalu was first climbed by an American team led by Riley Keegan in 1954.

India Bags 57 Medals at India Open International Boxing Tournament

  • The Second India Open International Boxing Tournament was held at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati from May 20-24, 2019.
  • India has claimed total 57 medals including 12 Gold, 18 Silver and 27 Bronze.
  • Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom won the gold in the 51 kg defeating on Vanlal Duati of Mizoram.
  • This was Mary’s second gold in the tournament after winning in 48 kg in 2018.

International Missing Children’s Day: May 25

  • The International Missing Children’s Day is observed every year on May 25 in the memory of all the children that have been missing or abducted and celebrates those who have been recovered and reunited with their families.
  • The day is also observed in United States of America as the National Missing Children’s Day, designated in 1983 by the then President Ronald Reagan.
