India Ranks 63rd on World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Ranking 2020

  • India has recorded a jump of 14 positions to be placed at 63rd position among 190 countries in the Ease of Doing Business Index 2020.
  • Last year India’s ranking was 77.
  • The Doing Business Report (DBR) 2020 was released by the World Bank on 24 October 2019, which ranks countries based on 10 parameters.
  • New Zealand has topped the 2020 index, followed by Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Denmark and South Korea.

First “Global Bio-India 2019” Summit to be held in New Delhi

  • The first-ever Global Bio-India 2019 Summit will be held at New Delhi from 21 to 23 November, 2019.
  • It is for the first time that India will host a mega event for the biotech community to attract investments, showcase our indigenous strengths and more importantly fuel the hopes and aspirations of the indigenous talent pool.
  • The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India along with its Public Sector Undertaking, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) is organizing this event.

Deepika Padukone and PV Sindhu Roped in as Brand Ambassador for PM Modi’s Bharat Ki Laxmi Initiative

  • Actor Deepika Padukone and ace shuttler PV Sindhu has been named as the ambassadors for ‘Bharat Ki Laxmi’ initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Bharat Ki Laxmi movement is a campaign launched to honour Indian women who have made a mark with their achievements in various fields for public good.
  • The initiative aims to bring the commendable work done by women across the nation to light ahead of the Diwali festival 2019.

Indian Army to Conduct Exercise Sindhu Sudarshan in Rajasthan from 29 November

  • The Indian Army will be conducting the exercise codenamed ‘Sindhu Sudarshan’ in the deserts of Rajasthan, from November 29 to December 4.
  • Over 40,000 troops will participate in this exercise.
  • The purpose of the exercise is to evaluate the capability of the defence services to strike deep into enemy territory in an integrated air-land battle.

Fitch Ratings cuts India’s GDP growth rate for FY20 to 5.5%

  • Fitch Ratings has revised the GDP growth rate prediction for India for FY20 to 5.5% from its earlier prediction of 6.6%.
  • For FY21 (2020-2021)- 6.2% and
  • For FY22 (2021-2022)- 6.7%

World Bank Inks USD 165 Million Loan Agreement with India to Support Climate Resilient Agriculture for Small holder Farmers in Odisha

  • The Government of India along with the state government of Odisha has signed USD 165 million loan agreement with the World Bank to Support Climate Resilient Agriculture for 125,000 Small holder Farmers in Odisha.
  • The project aims to support smallholder farmers strengthen the resilience of their production systems as well as diversify and improve the marketing of their produce, for increased income.
  • The Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture will be implemented in rural areas vulnerable to droughts and largely dependent on rain-fed agriculture.
  • The project will benefit about 125,000 smallholder farmer households from 15 districts of Odisha managing 128,000 ha of agricultural land.

Google achieves ‘quantum supremacy’ – developed processor “Sycamore”

  • Google has officially announced that it has achieved quantum supremacy. Google has done this in partnership with NASA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
  • What is Quantum Supremacy: quantum supremacy is the potential ability of devices to solve problems that classical computers practically cannot.
  • Google has developed a 54 qubit (quantum bit) processor named “Sycamore” that is able to perform a calculation in 200 seconds that would have taken the world’s most powerful supercomputer 10,000 years

  • Government of India has made the following major appointments:
    • Chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI): Arvind Singh (IAS) 
    • Chairman of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI): Sukhbir Singh Sandhu (IAS)
    • Chairman & managing director, National Small Industries Corporation Ltd: Vijayendra (IAS).

China to host the Inaugural Edition of expanded 24-team Club World Cup in 2021

  • The FIFA Council, the decision-making unit of football’s world governing body, has unanimously chosen China as the host nation for the new-format FIFA World Cup for Clubs.
  • China will host the inaugural expanded 24-team Club World Cup in 2021.
  • Currently the FIFA Club World Cup features 7 teams including the holders of the UEFA Champions League.
  • Qatar is the host nation for the competition to be held 2019 and 2020.

United Nations Day: October 24

  • Every year 24 October is celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
  • It was on this day in 1945 that the Charter of the United Nations came into force.
  • With the ratification of the UN Charter by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
  • It was declared to be an international observance in 1971 by UNGA and that it should be observed as a public holiday by United Nations member states.

  • World Polio Day is celebrated annually on October 24 to raise awareness for polio vaccination and eradication of polio.
