Prime Minister Launches Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana on 22 January 2019 to promote religious tourism in the country.
  • Under the scheme, a group of Indian diaspora will be taken on a government-sponsored tour of religious places in India twice a year. 
  • The government will bear all the expenses of the NRIs, including the airfare from their country of residence for the 25 days nationwide tour program.
  • The first batch of 40 Indian-origin pilgrims under the scheme were present at Pravasi Bharitya Divas from where they will begin their tour.
  • Indian-origin people between 45 to 65 are eligible to apply. A group will be selected out of them with first preference given to people from ‘Girmitiya countries’ such as Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.

Piyush Goyal Gets Additional Charge of Finance & Corporate Affairs Ministry

  • The Railway and Coal Minister Shri Piyush Goyal has been given the additional charge of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs, since Arun Jaitley is currently undergoing medical treatment in United States.
  • Jaitley was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer, for which he underwent surgery at a hospital in New York.
  • He would be designated as a Minister without a portfolio during the period of his indisposition or till the time he is able to resume work.
  • Goyal is likely to present the interim budget on February 1.
  • This is the second time Mr. Goyal has taken over from Mr. Jaitley due to the latter’s heath.

Ravneet Singh Gill named new MD and CEO of Yes Bank

  • Ravneet Singh Gill has been named the new MD and CEO of Yes Bank with effect from March 1, 2 019. Presently he is the CEO of Deutsche Bank India.
  • He will replace Rana Kapoor as the MD and CEO whose terms end on January 31, 2019.
  • The Bank has received RBI approval for its new MD and CEO.

Parthasarathi Mukherjee reappointed as MD of Lakshmi Vilas Bank

  • Parthasarathi Mukherjee has been reappointed as the managing director of Lakshmi Vilas Bank for another term of 2 years.
  • Parthasarathi Mukherjee joined the bank on January 25, 2016 for three years

Exercise IAFTX 2019 to be held in Pune in March

  • The Indian Africa Field Training Exercise (IAFTX) 2019 will be held in Pune from March 18 – 27, 2019.
  • The IAFTX-2019 is a positive step towards growing political and military ties with the member nations of African continent and will boost the already strong strategic cooperation between the countries
  • The training exercise would be conducted at Aundh Military Station and College of Military Engineering in Pune.
  • The final planning conference to work out the modalities for IAFTX 2019 was conducted in Pune on January 23-24, 2019, while the initial planning conference was held in December 2018.

New Naval Air Base INS Kohassa Commissioned in Andaman

  • The Naval Air Station (NAS) Shibpur in Andaman & Nicobar was commissioned as INS Kohassa by Chief of the Naval Staff  Admiral Sunil Lanba on 24 January 2019 to enhance the operational capability of Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC)..
  • INS Kohassa has been named after a White-Bellied Sea Eagle, which is a large bird of prey, endemic to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • This will be the 3rd Naval Air Facility after INS Utkarsh at Port Blair and INS Baaz at Campbell Bay in the Andaman.

South African Johan Botha retires from all forms of cricket

  • Cricketer Johan Botha announced retirement from all forms of cricket. He played for South Africa.
  • He was an all rounder for South Africa team.

National Girl Child Day : January 24

  • India observes the National Girl Child Day (NGCD) annually on January 24 since 2008.
  • The day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to promote awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society on a range of issues including education, health, and nutrition.
  • The theme of  NGCD 2019 is Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”.

International Day of Education: January 24

  • The first International Day of Education was observed on January 24, 2019.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on December 3 to declare January 24 as International Day of Education.
  • Purpose: Celebrate the role of education for peace and sustainable development.
