Andhra Pradesh becomes first state to reserve 75% private jobs for locals

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has passed the Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in Industries/Factories Act, 2019 that reserves 75% jobs in industrial units, factories, joint ventures and projects set up under public-private partnership mode for local youth.
  • With this Andhra Pradesh has become the first state to reserve 75% private jobs for locals.
  • Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh had promised to provide quota in local jobs during his ‘padyatra’ in the state. 

NAM Ministerial Meeting held at Caracas, Venezuela

  • Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) was held at Caracas, Venezuela. The theme of the event was: “Promotion and Consolidation of Peace through Respect for International Law”.
  • Now the Presidency of NAM will be given to Republic of Azerbaijan that will host the 18th Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in October 2019. 

SC extends NRC deadline to August 31

  • The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for publication of final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam to August 31, 2019 from earlier July 31, 2019.
  • The order was passed by a bench, comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman.
  • The National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state of Assam has been taken as the exercise to enumerate citizens in Assam. The exercise aims at identifying illegal immigrants in the state of Assam that borders Bangladesh.

IMF predicts GDP growth for India at 7% and 7.2% for 2019 and 2020

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected the GDP Growth rate for India at 7.0% in 2019 and 7.2% in 2020. There is a reduction of 0.3% as per earlier prediction by IMF.
  • This was announced in the World Economic Outlook, July 2019 released by IMF. The global GDP growth rate is predicted at 3.2% in 2019 and at 3.5% in 2020.

Walmart tops 2019 Fortune Global 500 ranking; Reliance Top Indian (106)

  • US Company Walmart has topped the 2019 Fortune Global 500 ranking. Reliance Industries is ranked at 106 and is the top Indian company in the ranking.
  • There are 7 Indian companies in the list. State Bank of India is the only Indian Bank in the list and is ranked at 236.
  • It is a list of the top 500 corporations worldwide as measured by revenue prepared by Forbes.

Vodafone shuts M-Pesa mobile banking business in India

  • M-Pesa, that is a mobile phone-based banking service of Vodafone has closed its operations in India with effect from July 15, 2019. 
  • M-Pesa had not been taking new deposits for a while now.

Lt Gen Narawane to be the next Vice Chief of Army Staff

  • Lt General MM Narawane will take over as the Vice Chief of Army Staff from August 31. He will replace incumbent Lt Gen Devraj Anbu who will retire on that date.
  • Lt. General MM Narawane is an Eastern Army Commander. 

Boris Johnson elected new Prime Minister of the UK

  • Boris Johnson has won the election and has been elected as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will replace  Theresa May, who announced her resignation last month.
  • Boris Johnson got 92,153 votes defeated Jeremy Hunt who got 46,656 votes.
  • Now Boris Johnson will deliver the Brexit that is scheduled for October 31, 2019.

S. Sowmya to be awarded with 2019 Sangita Kalanidhi award

  • SInger S. Sowmya has been chosen for the 2019 Sangita Kalanidhi award. The award is given by Madras Music Academy. The name of other award winners are:
    • Sangita Kala Acharya awards: Seetha Narayanan and M.S. Sheela
    • Nritya Kalanidhi award for Dance: Priyadarshini Govind
    • TTK awards: Vyasarpadi Kothandaraman and Rajkumar Bharathi
    • Musicologist Award: Aarti N. Rao

John Isner wins Hall of Fame Open (Tennis)

  • American Tennis Player, John Isner has won the 2019 Hall of Fame Open (Tennis) by defeating Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
  • This was his 4th win at Hall of Fame Open and he is the first player to win it 4 times.

National Broadcasting Day: 23 July

  • “National Broadcasting day” is observed on July 23 every year in India. It is celebrated as on this day in the year 1927, first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air under the Indian Broadcasting Company.
