India Ranks at 8th Position Among Recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in 2019: UNCTAD Report

  • The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) released the Global Investment Trend Monitor report on 20 January 2020.
  • Global FDI: As per the report, the global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2019 stood at $1.39 trillion, which is one percent decline from $1.41 trillion in 2018.
  • India’s Position: India is among the top 10 recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in 2019, at 8th position, attracting $49 billion FDI inflows, showing a 16 percent increase from the previous year.
  • The United States remained the largest recipient of FDI, attracting $251 billion in inflows.

President Kovind Confers Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2020 Awards to Children

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, 2020 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22 January 2020.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar is India’s Highest Civilian Honour bestowed upon exceptional students under the age of 18 in the country.
  • The Bal Puraskar is given annually by government to recognize exceptional achievements of children in various fields such as innovation, scholastic achievements, social service, arts and culture, sports and bravery.
  • The award was instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India in 1996.
  • The award consists of a Gold Medal, a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, certificate and a citation

Uttar Pradesh Government Launches Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana and Mukhyamantri Paryatan Samvardhan Yojana

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government-led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a scheme named Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana to provide financial assistance to family of farmers who die or become handicapped while working in fields.
  • Other than this, the state Government has also launched Mukhyamantri Paryatan Samvardhan Yojana to boost tourism in state.

Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana

  • Under the scheme, if a farmer or any member of his family dies while working in a field then they will be given financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh.
  • If they become 60 percent handicapped or more, then Rs 2 lakh will be given.
  • The scheme will cover farmers and their family members in the age group of 18-70 years.
  • The date of implementation of the scheme is September 14, 2019.
  • The scheme can be availed by filling an application form within 45 days of the farmer’s death or becoming divyang.
  • Also, for the first time, the scheme will include the Bataidars, who work in the field of other persons and share the crop after it is harvested.
  • The Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana is fully funded by the Uttar Pradesh government and will be extended through the District Magistrate.
Mukhyamantri Paryatan Samvardhan Yojana
  • Under the Mukhyamantri Paryatan Samvardhan Yojana one tourist point will be developed in each and every assembly segment of the state.
  • For this Rs 50 lakh will be provided for each tourist point

Reciting Preamble to Constitution Mandatory in Maharashtra Schools w.e.f January 26

  • On 21 January 2020, the Maharashtra government has passed an order that all the primary and secondary schools across the state must compulsorily recite the Preamble of the Constitution during their morning assemblies.
  • This programme will be implemented from 26 January 2020 across the state.
  • Reading out the Preamble is part of the “sovereignty of Constitution, welfare of all” campaign, launched so that the students understand its importance.

IIM Indore to train UP Police on Crowd Management & Effective Communication

  • The Indian Institute of Management Indore in Madhya Pradesh and the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 21 January 2020 under which IIM Indore will teach lessons on crowd management and effective communication to UP police to strengthen the beat policing system of the state.
  • The MoU for the project was signed between UP Director General of Police OP Singh and IIM Indore Director Professor Himanshu Rai in Lucknow.
  • The agreement includes training police in traffic management, data analysis, use of artificial intelligence, social media management among other aspects.

Engines Factory Avadi Becomes First Ordnance Factory To Double Manufacturing Capacity of Battle Tanks for Indian Army

  • The Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) in Chennai, has doubled its engine manufacturing capacity of battle tanks for Indian Army’s Main Battle Tanks (MBT) by commissioning a new system called Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS).
  • The new facility was dedicated to the nation by Hari Mohan IOFS, Chairman, Ordnance Factory Board on 21 January 2020.
  • The FMS is expected to more than double the engine production capacity of the plant to 750 per annum, from the earlier capacity of 350 engines per year, to meet the increasing demand of the Indian Army.
  • This makes EFA, the first Ordnance Factory in the country to have FMS system for increasing productivity.
  • The Engine Factory at Avadi is the only unit in the country dedicated to manufacturing fully indigenized engines for the Army’s Main Battle Tanks.

Government sets up National Startup Advisory Council to Strengthen Start-up Ecosystem

  • The government has set up a National Startup Advisory Council (NSAC) that will advise the Centre on measures needed to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and start-ups in the country.
  • The Council, which will be chaired by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.

DoT Approves 100 Percent FDI in Bharti Airtel

  • The telecom company Bharti Airtel Limited has received the approval from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to increase the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit upto 100 percent of the paid up capital of the Company.
  • Earlier, the limit was 49 percent.
  • The approval will now allow FPls (Foreign Portfolio Investors)/Flls (Foreign Institutional Investors) to invest in up to 74 percent of the paid-up capital of the Company.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Launches E-passport Facility

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the e-passport facility for its citizens on 22 January 2020, terming it as a gift to the nation in the Mujib centenary year.
  • With this, Bangladesh becomes the first country in South Asia and 119th country in the wold to provide e-passport facility.
  • The e-passports will have an embedded chip in them. The chip will contain the bio-metric data of the passport holder, photograph and other information. It will also include digital security features in it.

Former Test Batsman Man Mohan Sood passes away at 80

  • Former Test batsman and National selector Man Mohan Sood passed away at the age of 80.
  • Sood played one Test and 39 first-class matches with one century in his cricket career.
  • Sood made his first class debut against Services in 1957 and played his final Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir in 1964.
  • His lone Test appearance came against Richie Benaud-led Australia at Madras in 1960 when India lost by an innings and 55 runs.
