US to build first exascale supercomputer in 2021
- The United States(US) will build the world’s first exascale supercomputer named Aurora by 2021. It is about 7 times more powerful in terms of speed than the present fastest system.
- The US Department of Energy (DOE) granted a $500 million contract to Intel and sub-contractor Cray Computing for the supercomputer.
- The Aurora system’s exaFLOP of performance — equal to a “quintillio” floating point computations per second – combined with an ability to handle traditional high performance computing with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Exascale computing refers to computing systems capable of at least one exaFLOPS, or a billion billion (i.e. a quintillion) calculations per second.
Operation Sunrise – India and Myanmar jointly destroy insurgents’ camps
- Indian and Myanmar armies carried out a military operation named `Operation Sunrise’ to wipe out insurgent camps who were planning to hit the Indian workers at the Kaladan Transit project.
- The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project aims to connect seaports from India to Myanmar. The Joint operation was conducted from mid- February till mid- March.
- The target of these operations carried out by the armies of both countries was the Arakan Army, an insurgent group trained by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), and reportedly trained by China.
Lokpal to have 8 members; PC Ghose appointed first Lokpal of India
- The first the national anti-corruption ombudsman i.e Lokpal has been officially set up by President Ram Nath Kovind on March 19, 2019. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose is has been appointed as the Lokpal.
- The Lokpal has 8 members with four judicial and four non-judicial members. The name of these 8 members are given below:
- Judicial Members: Former Chief Justices – Dilip B. Bhosale, Pradip Kumar Mohanty, and Abhilasha Kumari and sitting Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court Ajay Kumar Tripathi.
- Non-judicial Members: Archana Ramasundaram (former first woman Chief of Sashastra Seema Bal ), Dinesh Kumar Jain (ex-Maharashtra Chief Secretary ), Mahender Singh (former IRS officer ) and Indrajeet Prasad Gautam (ex-IAS officer ).
- The lokpal act states that the Lokpal is to be headed by a chairperson and the body will also consist of not more than eight members out of whom 50 per cent shall be judicial members.
RBI caps Rs 25,000 limit on carrying amount to Nepal, Bhutan
- The Reserve Bank of India has announced that an individual traveling from India to Nepal or Bhutan may carry Indian Currency of denominations ₹200/- and/or ₹500/- subject to a total limit of ₹25,000/-.
- However, any person traveling to Nepal or Bhutan can carry any amount of money for the denomination of Rs. 100 or less.
