India Grants USD 15 Million Assistance to Niger for Holding African Union Summit

  • The Government of India has extended USD 15 million assistance to Niger for organising the African Union (AU) summit in Niamey from July 7-8, 2019.
  • It is the first time that Niger will host the AU summit.
  • The assistance in the form of grant will further contribute towards enhancing of bilateral ties.

J&K Govt Launches ‘Back to the Village’ Programme; Bureaucrats to Spend Time in Villages

  • The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has launched its ambitious outreach programme, ‘Back to the Village’, to be undertaken from June 20-27 across all Panchayats of the state.
  • Under the eight-day programme, bureaucrats will spend the next 36 hours in different panchayats to gather feedback from people on development of their areas.
  • The initiative aims at equitable development of all rural areas in the state with improved delivery of village-specific services.

Telangana partners with NPCI for MeeSeva services

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Government of Telangana have signed an agreement to offer the users of MeeSeva portal the option to pay using UPI Collect Request, RuPay Debit and Credit Cards for the services.
  • MeeSeva is a single entry portal for the entire range of G2C & G2B services in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. 

DBS Bank cuts India’s GDP rate for FY20 to 6.8%

  • DBS Bank has cut India’s GDP growth for the fiscal year 2020 (2019-20)  to 6.8 percent from 7 percent projected earlier.

Bangladesh Emerges as Fastest Growing Economy in Asia-Pacific: ADB

  • According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Bangladesh has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the Asia-Pacific region comprised of 45 countries.
  • As per the ADB’s annual Asian Development Outlook (ADO), Bangladesh achieved growth rate of 7.9 percent in 2018-19, which was the fastest expansion since 1974.
  • The bank has predicted a record breaking growth for the country at 8 percent in the FY2019 and FY2020.

CCIL to roll out foreign exchange trading platform (FX-Retail) for retail participants

  • The Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL) will roll out an electronic trading platform for buying/selling foreign exchange by retail customers of banks named FX-Retail on August 05, 2019.
  • This will provide the customers of the bank (MSMEs and Individuals) direct access to the market who has a need to purchase or sell US Dollar against the Rupee for delivery. There will be an option for purchase/sell on cash basis (same day), tom basis (next day) or spot basis (two days after the date of transaction).
  • The following conditions are however levied:
    • The size of a single transaction is not allowed to exceed $5 million.
    • There is no cap on the number of transactions per customer during a day. The total amount of transactions of a customer shall be subject to the limit assigned by its bank.
    • As a further facility for retail clients, no transaction charges shall be levied by the CCIL on transactions of customers if such transactions do not exceed USD 50,000 per day.
    • A transaction charge of 0.0004% shall be charged by the CCIL for transactions in excess of USD 50,000 per day.
  • The customer registration process on the platform shall commence on July 01, 2019 and the platform shall be available for transactions from August 05, 2019.

Indian Engineer Wins Commonwealth Innovation Award for Neonatal Breathing Device

  • Nitesh Kumar Jangir, an Indian engineer, has won the 2019 Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Award.
  • He won the award in People’s category for his low-cost breathing support device named as Saans for new-born babies.
  • Jangir along with 14 other innovators from across the 53 member-countries of the Commonwealth received the award in London on June 14.

Shefali Juneja appointed India’s representative to ICAO

  • Shefali Juneja has been appointed as India’s representative in the Council of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
  • At present Shefali Juneja is a Joint Secretary in Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Chitra Wins Gold, Johnson Settles For Silver at Folksam Grand Prix

  • Asian champion P.U. Chitra of India won the women’s 1500m gold, clocking 4:12.65s at the Folksam Grand Prix in Sollentuna, Sweden. She beat former Commonwealth Games champion Kenya’s Mercy Cherono.
  • In men’s category, Asian Games gold medallist Jinson Johnson won the silver in 1500m clocking 3:39.69s behind Sweden’s Andreas Almgren (3:39.68s).

International Surfing Day 2019: June 15

  • The International Surfing Day (ISD) is held annually on the third Saturday of June to promote the popularity of surfing and to attract new participants.
  • In 2019, the ISD is being held on June 15.
