Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurates TN Defence Industrial Corridor

  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor in the Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu on January 20.
  • The Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor is India’s second defence industrial corridor after the first one was launched in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh August 2018 at a cost of Rs 3,732 crore.
  • The Tamil Nadu corridor has six nodes at Trichy, Salem, Hosur, Kovai, Madurai and Chennai.
  • The Defence Minister also launched the “CODISSIA Defence Innovation and Incubation Centre” to support the MSMEs, Start-Ups and existing industries in their endeavour to expand and contribute significantly for defence indigenisation and other areas.

Indians over 65, under 15 can now use Aadhaar to enter Nepal, Bhutan

  • Home Ministry has notified that Aadhaar cards are now valid travel documents for Indians under 15 and over 65 travelling to Nepal and Bhutan.
  • For people not in this age bracket Aadhaar card will not be a valid document to enter the countries like Nepal and Bhutan where Visa is not mandatory for Indians.
  • Earlier, persons over 65 and under 15 could show their PAN card, driving licence, Central Government Health Service (CGHS) card or ration card, but not the Aadhaar, to prove their identity and visit the two countries.

Two Days Agri-Vision 2019 Concludes in Hyderabad

  • The two days conference ‘Agri-Vision 2019’ was inaugurated in Hyderabad, Telangana by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
  • The conference was held from January 17-18, 2019.
  • The theme of the conference was ‘Envisioning Agro Solutions for Smart and Sustainable Agriculture’

IBBI Sets Up ‘Group Insolvency’ Panel Under Former SEBI Chief UK Sinha

  • The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has constituted a 11-member working group under the Chairmanship of former SEBI chief UK Sinha to look into the concept of ‘Group Insolvency’ and suggest a suitable framework.
  • The main purpose of ‘Group Insolvency’ is to recommend a complete regulatory framework to facilitate insolvency resolution and liquidation of debtors in a corporate group within the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
  • Presently, the IBC provides resolution or liquidation of only individual stressed companies. So a framework within the IBC is sought to be created for the resolution/liquidation of an entire stressed corporate group having several entities in multiple NCLT jurisdictions.
  • The working group, with seven members and four invitees, will submit its report in two months of its formation.

SBI raises US $1.25 billion funds from overseas market through GSM Platform

  • State Bank of India has raised US $ 1.25 billion through bonds from the overseas market.
  • The bonds of SBI were listed on the Global Securities Market (GSM) platform managed by India International Exchange IFSC Ltd (INDIA INX). BSE is the parent organisation of INDIA INX.
  • GSM is India’s first and leading capital raising platform for international investors in any currency, located at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) IFSC.

Indians biggest supporters of international aid: WEF global survey

  • As per a global public opinion survey carried out by World Economic Forum , India has topped when it comes to people expecting their nation to help other countries.
  • The respondents in the survey of over 10,000 people were asked that do they think their country has a responsibility to help other countries in the world.
  • As many as 95 percent Indians replied in affirmative, which was the highest for any country, followed by 94 percent in Indonesia and Pakistan each.

2nd World Integrated Medicine Forum 2019 to Be Held in Goa (23-25 January 2019)

  • The 2nd edition of the World Integrated Medicine Forum 2019 will be held in Goa from 23-25 January, 2019.
  • The theme of the event is :Regulation of Homeopathic Medical Products; Advancing Global Collaboration’.
  • The forum will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik.
  • It has been organised by Central Council for Research in Homeopathy, under the Ministry of AYUSH together with World Integrated Medicine Forum.

Stefan Lofven Re-Elected as Swedens PM for Second Term

  • Sweden’s parliament has elected Prime Minister Stefan Lofven to a second four-year term.
  • The Social Democrat leader won by 153 votes to 115 in September elections to be re-elected to the post.

Khelo India Youth Games 2019 Concludes: Maharashtra Tops with 228 medals

  • The second edition of the Khelo India Youth Games concluded on January 20 2019 in Pune, which began on January 9 at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex.
  • Vijay- the tiger and Jaya- the black buck were the mascot of the tournament while the anthem was “Aur khelna chahte hain hum…Khel mein hi masti hai….khel se abaad honge hum”
  • Hosts Maharashtra won the overall tournament with total 228 medals.
  • Top 3 Winners of Khelo India Youth Games 2019
    1. Maharashtra: 228 (85 gold, 62 silver and 81 bronze).
    2. Haryana: 178 (62 gold, 56 silver and 60 bronze)
    3. Delhi: 136 (48 gold, 37 silver and 51 bronze)

Bengali writer Atin Bandyopadhyay passes away

  • Sahitya Akademi award winning Bengali writer Atin Bandyopadhyay passed away at 85.
  • Winner of 2001 Sahitya Akademi award for his compilation of short stories ‘Panchashati Galpo’, Bandyopadhyay had also penned popular fictions like ‘Nilkantha Pakhir Khonje’, ‘Aloukik Jaljaan’, ‘Nil Timi’, ‘Ekti Jaler Rekha’ in his illustrious career spanning over decades.

World’s oldest man, 113, Masazo Nonaka passed away in Japan

  • The world’s oldest man named Masazo Nonaka of age 113 has died at his home in Japan.
  • He was certified by Guinness World Records in April 2018 as the world’s oldest living man at 112 years and 259 days.
