First International Conference on Sustainability Education Held in New Delhi

  • The first-of-its-kind International Conference on Sustainability Education (ICSE) was held on September 9 – 10, 2019 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
  • The conference was organised jointly by Mobius Foundation, The Climate Reality Project, India in partnership with UNESCO New Delhi office to explore ways to address the challenges halting the path of sustainable education.
  • The conference also saw the launch of ‘World Environment School (WESc)’, a first of its kind in India as well as in South Asia. WESc has been set up in Coorg, Karnataka.

India’s First Central Police University To be Set up in Greater Noida

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs is set to launch India’s first Central Police University near the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida.
  • The University will be established in Sector Techzone, Greater Noida, over an area of 100 acres of land, costing Rs 372 crore.
  • The proposed University is a part of the Ministry’s top 100 achievements in 100 days of second term of Modi government and aims to improve the law and order situation of the country and intensify the training for cops.

India’s first environmental school to come up in Karnataka

  • India’s first environment school named World Environment School, Coorg (WESc) will come up at Coorg, Karnataka.
  • It will be the first school in India and South Asia to take a leading role in promoting and delivering environmental education with sustainability at its core.
  • WESc will become operational from the year 2021 and will be open for students of Grade 6 to 12 from India and around the world.
  • It will be launched by Mobius Foundation, a non-profit organization working towards environmental sustainability.

Beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana crosses 1 crore mark

  • The total number of beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) has crossed 1 crore.
  • The scheme was launched in 2017. Some highlights of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) scheme are:
  • Purpose: It is a direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme under which cash benefits are provided to pregnant women in their bank account directly to meet enhanced nutritional needs and partially compensate for wage loss.
  • Benefits: Under the ‘Scheme’, Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM) receive a cash benefit of Rs. 5,000 in three installments on fulfilling the respective conditionality.
  • Ministry: Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • The total amount disbursed to the beneficiaries under the scheme has crossed Rs. 4,000 crores.
  • State with the highest number of beneficiary: Maharashtra

Ministry of HRD announces NEAT Scheme for Higher Education

  • Ministry of Human Resource Development has announced a new Scheme named National Educational Alliance for Technology (NEAT) under which technology (Artificial Intelligence) will be used for better learning outcomes in Higher Education.
  • Artificial Intelligence will be used to make learning more personalized and customized as per the requirements of the learner.
  • Implementing Agency: AICTE would be the implementing agency for NEAT programme. The scheme shall be administered under the guidance of an Apex Committee constituted by MHRD.
  • It is a Public-private partnership scheme (PPP Scheme). MHRD would create and maintain a National NEAT platform that would provide one-stop access to these technological solutions. EdTech companies would be responsible for developing solutions and manage registration of learners through the NEAT portal.

Delhi Police Launches Mobile App ‘Tatpar’ for Citizen-centric Services

  • The Delhi Police has developed a unified mobile application named ‘Tatpar’ for its citizens to provide more than 50 citizen-centric services in a single app.
  • The app was launched by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on September 18, 2019.
  • Tatpar App amalgamates over 50 services of Delhi Police, including important websites, mobile applications and helpline numbers, and has been classified in three categories: home, information and social.
  • The app is a one stop solution for services like e-FIR registration, directions to nearest Police Station or prepaid taxi booth, traffic services, facilities for senior citizens, missing person services among others.
  • Citizens can also share information to police about a suspicious vehicle or person or of a crime using the app.

Indian School of Business (ISB) Ranks 7th in Forbes’ ‘Best Business School 2019’ List Globally

  • The Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad has secured seventh position globally and first in Asia, in the Forbes’ “Best Business Schools 2019” rankings, in one-year programme category.
  • The list has been topped by IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • ISB participated in Forbes’ rankings for the first time this year. It has two campuses, one in Hyderabad and the other at Mohali.
  • This Forbes’ rankings are announced every two years and ranks the schools solely on their 5-year MBA gain.
  • It represents the net cumulative amount the typical alumni would have earned after five years by getting their MBA versus staying in their pre-MBA career.

Rajnath Singh Becomes First Defence Minister to Fly ‘LCA Tejas’

  • The Union Minister of Defence Shri Rajnath Singh scripted history as he became the first Defence Minister to fly the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas’ on September 19, 2019 at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru.
  • The minister was accompanied by Air Vice Marshall Narmdeshwar Tiwari for the 30-minute sortie in the indigenously-built multi-role fourth-generation fighter aircraft.

Four New Judges appointed in Supreme Court, Strength Goes Up to Highest-ever of 34

  • Four new judges have appointed to the Supreme Court as a result of which the number of judges has reached upto 34.
  • Recently the Parliament increased the maximum number of judges in the apex court from 31 to 34 (including the Chief Justice of India (CJI)).
  • The new judges are: 
    • Justices V Ramasubramanian Himachal Pradesh High Court
    • Krishna Murari Punjab and Haryana High Courts
    • Justices S Ravindra Bhat Rajasthan High Court
    • Hrishikesh Roy Kerala High Court

Air Marshal RKS Bhadauria Named as Next Chief of Indian Air Force

  • Air Marshal RKS Bhadauria, has been selected as the new Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He is currently serving as the Vice Chief of Air Staff.
  • Bhadauria will be the 26th Chief of the Air Staff and will hold the position for two years till he reaches the age of 62. However the post allows to serve a term of three years or till the age of 62, whichever is earlier.
  • Bhadauria will succeed Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa, whose three years term is ending on September 30.

Vinesh Phogat Wins Bronze Medal in World Wrestling Championships 2019

  • Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat has clinched a bronze medal in women’s 53-kg category at the World Wrestling Championships 2019 held at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
  • The 25-year-old defeated two-time world bronze medalist Maria Prevolariki of Greece (4-1).
  • Vinesh is also the first Indian wrestler to secure an Olympic quota for the 2020 Tokyo Games. She won both her matches in the repechage round of the 53-kg weight category to secure the quota.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk Named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year 2018-19; Lucy Bronze Takes Women’s Award

  • Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2018/19.
  • The 28-year-old Dutch international beat three-time UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo and two-time winner Lionel Messi to win the prestigious title.
