India-Myanmar Naval Exercise IMNEX-2019 Commences in Visakhapatnam

  • The second edition of ‘India Myanmar Naval Exercise’ IMNEX-2019 began in Visakhapatnam, onboard INS Ranvijay on October 18, 2019.
  • The IMNEX-2019 will have harbour phase and sea phase and will conclude on October 22, 2019.
  • Myanmar naval ships UMS Sin Phyu Shin (F-14) and UMS Tabinshweti (773) are participating in the exercise.
  • INS Ranvijay and INS Kuthar will be participating ships from India.

No charges on digital payments made to large business establishments (turnover>Rs 50 crore) from Nov 1

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that system providers will not impose charges or Merchant Discount Rate on customers as well as merchants on digital payments made to establishments having a turnover in excess of Rs 50 crore from November 1.
  • For this, amendments have been made in the income tax act as well as in the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007.

SBI’s Rajnish Kumar elected as Chairman of Indian Banks Association

  • Head of State Bank of India, Rajnish Kumar has been elected as the chairman of the Indian Banks Association for fiscal 2019-20.
  • Indian Banks Association is a body comprising members from various banks and represents banks’ interests with the government and regulators.
  • G Rajkiran Rai (of Union Bank of India), S S Mallikarjuna Rao (of Punjab National Bank) and Madhav Kalyan (of JP Morgan Chase Bank) have been elected as deputy chairmen.

Sudhaker Shukla Appointed Whole-Time Member of IBBI

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Sudhaker Shukla as a Whole-Time Member (WTM) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), for a period of five years or upto the age of 65 years.
  • With this appointment, the Governing Board of IBBI is complete, which can have a total strength of 10.
  • The Governing Board Members of IBBI consists of a Chairman, 3 WTM, four ex officio members and two part-time members.

Anup Kumar Singh Appointed new Director General of NSG

  • Senior IPS officer Anup Kumar Singh has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the National Security Guard (NSG) on October 18, 2019.
  • He is a 1985-batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre.
  • Singh will serve the post up to September 30, 2020 (date of his superannuation) or till further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • NSG is famously known as ‘black cats commando’ force.

NASA Astronauts Successfully Completes first-ever all Women Spacewalk

  • Two NASA astronauts namely Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made space history on October 18 as they completed the first-ever spacewalk by an all-woman team.
  • The two astronauts stepped outside the International Space Station to replace a faulty battery charger.
  • This was the fourth spacewalk for Koch while the first for Meir.
  • The spacewalk is known as an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) in astronaut jargon.

Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) conducted second edition of large scale joint services exercise ,Defence of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ 2019 (DANX-19), from 14 Oct to 18 Oct 19.
