IBBI, SEBI sign MoU for better implementation of IBC

  • The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) have signed MoU for effective implementation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (Code) and its allied rules and regulations.
  • They have agreed under the MoU to assist and co-operate with each other for the effective implementation of the Code, subject to limitations imposed by the applicable laws.
  • The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 is the bankruptcy law of India which seeks to consolidate the existing framework by creating a single law for insolvency and bankruptcy.

33rd IND-INDO CORPAT begins at Port Blair

  • The 33rd edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) has started on 19 March and will continue till 04 April 2019.
  • The opening ceremony was held at Port Blair. The closing ceremony will be held at Belawan, Indonesia on 04  April 2019.
  • During this period ship and aircraft from both the countries would undertake patrolling on the respective sides of 236 nautical miles long International Maritime Boundary line

China becomes first country to conduct remote surgery using 5G

  • China has successfully conducted the world’s first remote surgery using 5G technology.
  • The surgery was conducted as a joint collaboration between Chinese PLA General Hospital, tech companies Huawei and China Mobile.
  •  The surgery was conducted by Surgeon Ling Zhipei who was physically present in South China’s Hainan Province. While he implanted a neuro-stimulator, or ‘brain pacemaker’ into a patient with Parkinson’s disease at the Chinese PLA General Hospital in Beijing using medical equipment through transmitted images supported by 5G technologies

Pramod Sawant Takes Oath as Goa’s 13th Chief Minister

  • The BJP MLA Pramod Sawant took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Goa at 2 am on March 18 night. Two deputy Chief Ministers were also sworn in, along with other ministers in the 12 member cabinet.
  • The 45-year-old, former Speaker of Goa legislative Assembly, succeeds former defence minister and four-time CM of Goa Manohar Parrikar, who recently passed away after a prolonged battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.
  • Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP’s) Ramkrishna Dhavlikar and Vijai Sardadesai of Goa Forward Party were sworn in as deputy Chief Ministers.

Goldman Sachs upgrades India to ‘overweight’ amid elections

  • Rating agency Goldman Sachs (GS) has upgraded its view on India to “overweight” which means it is better than others. Earlier Goldman Sachs had the view of “marketweight” for India.
  • There are three such views: One is “overweight” which means better than others; Second is Marketweight/Underweight which means not better than others. The third is equal weight which means similar to others.

Xiaomi launches its UPI app Mi Pay in partnership with ICICI Bank

  • Chinese mobile company Xiaomi, launched its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based payments application “Mi Pay”.
  • ICICI Bank is the payment service provider for the Mi Pay App that is integrated within MIUI interface across SMS, contacts, scanner, app vault and settings

India Loses Hosting Rights for the Junior Asian Championship 2019; New Host -Thailand

  • The world wrestling body United World Wrestling (UWW) has taken away the hosting rights from India to host junior Asian Championship which was to be held in July 2019.
  • India had agreed to host the re-scheduled junior Championship in July after original hosts Lebanon withdrew.
  • UWW has shifted the new venue for the junior Asian championship from India to Thailand.
  • UWW’s decision comes after India denied to issue visas to a three-member shooting contingent from Pakistan for the shooting World Cup in Delhi. UWW has also asked all its affiliated federations to suspend all communication with Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

India Finishes Second with 26 Medals at 2019 Asian Youth Athletics Championships; China Tops

  • The third edition of the Asian Youth Athletics Championships 2019 was held at the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground in Hong Kong from 15 to 17 March.
  • It is a biennial, continental athletics competition for Asian athletes aged 15 to 17.
  • India secured second position in the medal table by winning 26 medals including 8 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze.
  • China topped the medal tally with 31 medals (12-11-8).

Karen Uhlenbeck becomes first woman to win the Abel Prize for maths

  • Karen Uhlenbeck of the United States has won the Abel Prize 2019 in Mathematics. With this, she has become the first woman to win this Abel Prize for Mathematics.
  • The Prize is named after mathematician Niels Henrik Abel of Norway and is set up by Norway Government.

Indian Author Raghu Karnad Wins US Windham-Campbell Prize

  • Indian journalist and author Raghu Karnad has won the $165,000 Windham-Campbell Prize 2019, in the non-fiction category, for his book, Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War, published in 2015.
  • Delhi based Karnad was one among eight recipients of Yale University’s Windham-Campbell Prize in four categories, namely – Fiction, Non-fiction, Drama and Poetry, in London.
  • Apart from Karnad, the other winner in non-fiction category was American writer Rebecca Solnit.
  • Windham-Campbell Prize is one of the world’s most lucrative literary awards, open to English language writers from across the world, with each winner receiving $165,000 to support their writing.
