Amit Shah to head the panel on Air India sale

  • The Air India Specific Alternative Mechanism (AISAM) panel that was constituted in June 2017 for disinvestment in Air India has been reconstituted. Now Amit Shah will head the panel.
  • Earlier the panel had 5 members with the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as its head. Now there are 4 members Amit Shah (Head), Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal and  Hardeep Singh Puri.  Nitin Gadkari has been dropped from the panel.
  • In its first attempt, the Central Government had invited bids from investors in 2018 to buy out the government’s 76 percent stake in Air India. However, this failed as the investors did not put in their bids. Hence the committee has been reconstituted to start the bidding process from a new point.

Health Ministry Signs MoUs with 3 Ministries for Joint Cooperation to End TB by 2025

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has exchanged Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with three ministries namely the Ministry of AYUSH, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Railways to strengthen inter-ministerial coordination and efforts towards Tuberculosis-free India by 2025.
  • The government of India is committed to end TB by 2025, a good five years ahead of the global targets.

5th International Police Expo 2019 held in New Delhi

  • The 5th edition of the International Police Expo 2019 has been organised in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The event will be held from July 19, 2019 to July 20, 2019.
  • International Police Expo 2019 is the only exhibition which is focused on Police personnel. In this police representatives of different nations and policing security equipment and technology suppliers come together to meet their business opportunities related to internal security, Training, Protection and Rescue

World Bank drops USD 715 mn Amaravati Sustainable Capital City from its project list

  • The World Bank has “dropped” out of the Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project from its project list. It means that now, World Bank will not fund this project of the Andhra Pradesh Government. 
  • The total project cost was USD 715 million. Out of this the World Bank planning to provide loan of USD 300 million while AIIB had committed USD 200 million. 
  • An Official of the World Bank informed that the Government of India has withdrawn its request to the World Bank for financing the project. Hence the decision was taken.

Standard Chartered to be first foreign bank to launch operation at GIFT IFSC

  • Standard Chartered has received in-principle regulatory approvals to set up its IFSC Banking Unit in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
  • With its operation here, it will become the first foreign bank to launch operations at International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
  • UK based Standard Chartered bank is expected to start the operation in GIFT city by the end of 2019.

Vivek Kumar Appointed as Private Secretary to PM Modi

  • Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vivek Kumar has been appointed as private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Kumar is currently working as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office.
  • His appointment will come into effect from the day of the assumption of charge and his tenure will be on co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Amita Prasad Appointed Chairperson of Inland Waterways Authority of India

  • Ms. Amita Prasad, a 1985-batch IAS officer has been appointed as the Chairperson, Inland Waterways Authority of India, Ministry of Shipping in the rank and pay of Secretary.
  • Presently she is the Director General, National Productivity Council, Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. 

Sachin Tendulkar Becomes 6th Indian to be Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

  • The Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has been inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame in 2019. He is the sixth Indian to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
  • South African pace legend Allan Donald and two-time World Cup-winning Australian woman cricketer Cathryn Fitzpatrick have also joined the Hall of Fame in 2019.
  • Now the total inductees in the list has become 90, which includes 8 women.
  • To become eligible for induction in the Hall of Fame, a player should have played his last international match at least five years before. 

Zimbabwe, Croatia and Zambia suspended whilst Morocco is expelled from Cricket by ICC

  • In its Annual Conference meetings in London, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it has suspended Zimbabwe, Croatia and Zambia from ICC events till October 2019. While Morocco has been expelled from Membership of the ICC. 
  • The reason for the suspension of the three-country is due to the interference of the respective government in the sports event. Further decision about there suspension will be taken in October 2019. 
  • Apart from this some major decisions are: 
    • Concussion player replacements to be introduced in international cricket
    • Captains will no longer be suspended for repeated or serious over-rate breaches. All players should be held equally responsible for slow over rates, and as such will be fined at the same level as the captain.
    • In World Test Championship matches a team that is behind the required over-rate at the end of a match will have two competition points deducted for each over it is behind. 
  • Apart from this the newly constituted ICC Women’s Committee headed by Clare Connor met for the first time.

Rachna Bisht Rawat Authors “Kargil: Untold stories from the War”

  • A new book titled “Kargil: Untold stories from the War” will be released on 20th anniversary of Kargil War. 
  • It has been authored by Rachna Bisht Rawat and published by Penguin Random House.
  • The book is based on the interviews conducted by author with war survivors and martyrs’ families and is a tribute to their courage and to that of their families.
  • The year 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of victory in ‘Operation VIJAY’ popularly known as the ‘Kargil War’ which took place in 1999.
  • The ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’  is held nationally every year on July 26.

Founder of Saravana Bhavan Restaurant Group P Rajagopal Passes Away

  • P Rajagopal, the owner of Saravana Bhavan restaurant group has died suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 72.
  • He was a convict in a 2001 murder case for murdering one of his employees and had recently surrendered before the Madras High Court to undergo life imprisonment.
  • Saravana Bhavan is the largest South Indian vegetarian restaurant chain in the world.

Former South Africa footballer Marc Batchelor Passes Away at 49

  • Former South African soccer player Marc Batchelor passed away after being shot outside his home in Johannesburg. He was 49.
  • Marc had played for South African teams Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Veteran Bengali Actor Swarup Dutta Passes Away

  • Veteran Bengali actor Swarup Dutta passed away due to age related issues. He was 78.
  • Dutta was best known for his versatile roles in films between 1960s and 1970s.
