Two Day International Conference on Teacher Education Held in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ inaugurated the International Conference titled “Journey of Teacher Education: Local to Global” in New Delhi.
  • The two-day event was organised on August 17-18, 2019 by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE).
  • 40 renowned experts from India and abroad participated in the conference.
  • NCTE was established on 17 August 1995 to achieve planned and coordinated development of teacher education system in India and maintenance of norms and standards therein.

Gujarat to Get India’s First Central Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (CICET)

  • The Union Minister of State for Chemical & Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya has said that the first Central Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (CICET) will be set up in Gujarat.
  • It will be the first ever such institute in India and will be set up either in Vatva or Surat on the lines of the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET) located in Ahmedabad.
  • Since Gujarat is a hub of chemical industries with the significant presence of Chemical industries in Vapi, Ankleshwar and Vatva, the need to set up CICET was felt by the government to facilitate chemical industries with research and innovations and hence benefit these industries.

Chhattisgarh to Set up ‘Lemru Elephant Reserve’

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has announced to set up ‘Lemru Elephant Reserve’ to provide permanent habitat for the wild elephants in the state.
  • The Reserve will be spread over an area of 450 square kilometres and will contribute towards saving wild life and preserving of biodiversity in the region, as well as minimize human-elephant conflict and destruction of property caused by the movement of elephants.

IIT-Madras Researchers Launches Industrial and Field Robot ‘GraspMan’

  • Researchers at IIT Madras have developed a multi-modal robot named as ‘GraspMan’ having Industrial and field applications.
  • GraspMan is equipped with a pair of graspers enabling it to hold objects securely and manipulate it much like the human hand.
  • The research is led by Asokan Thondiyath, Robotics Laboratory, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, with his student and Research Scholar Nagamanikandan Govindan.
  • GraspMan will be helpful in industrial applications such as pipe climbing and inspection and also in search-and-rescue operations.

India largest SO2 emitter in world: Greenpeace

  • India is the world’s largest emitter of anthropogenic sulphur dioxide (SO2) as per a study conducted by environmental NGO Greenpeace based on the data of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  • India has more than 15% of all anthropogenic sulphur dioxide (SO2) hotspots in the world detected by the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) satellite.
  • In terms of individual hotspots, the Norilsk smelter complex in Russia continues to be the largest SO2 emission hotspot in the world.

Government removes Debenture Redemption Reserve requirement for Listed Companies, NBFCs and HFCs

  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has amended the Companies (Share Capital & Debentures) Rules by reducing the DRR for unlisted companies and removing DRR for Listed Companies, NCFCs and HFCs. The two amendments are:
  • For listed companies- the requirement for the creation of a Debenture Redemption Reserve (DRR) of 25% of the value of outstanding debentures has been removed. This includes NBFCs registered with RBI and for Housing Finance Companies registered with National Housing Bank (NHB) both for public issue as well as private placements.
  • For unlisted companies- Debenture Redemption Reserve (DRR) has been reduced for unlisted companies from 25% to 10%, so as to safeguard interests of investors.

Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) partners with NPCI partners to issue new credit card in India

  • Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) International in partnership with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), along with domestic banks have announced the launch of a new credit card — RuPay JCB Global Cards. 
  • Eight banks in India will issue RuPay JCB Global Cards- including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Andhra Bank, City Union Bank, and TJSB Bank. 
  • This credit card is RuPay in India and JCB in foreign countries.

Manmohan Singh elected to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

  • Congress leader and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
  • The election for a seat in Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan comes after demise of BJP’s unit president Madan Lal Saini in June. This time BJP did not field any candidate against Manmohan Singh.
  • With this Manmohan Singh has become the sole Congress candidate amongst 10 Rajya Sabha Members in Rajasthan and rest 09 are from BJP.

Daniil Medvedev and Madison Keys wins Cincinnati Masters Tennis Single Titles

The Cincinnati Masters Tennis Tournament 2019 has come to an end. Every year it is held at  Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. The list of winners in each category are:

  • Men’s singles: Daniil Medvedev (Russia)
  • Women’s singles: Madison Keys (United States)
  • Men’s doubles: Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Filip Polášek (Slovakia)
  • Women’s doubles: Lucie Hradecká (Czech Republic) and Andreja Klepač (Slovenia)

AIG Ashish Kapoor Bags 2 Gold in Tennis at World Police and Fire Games 2019 in Chengdu

  • Ashish Kapoor , an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in Vigilance Bureau of Punjab, has claimed gold medals in both singles and doubles titles in Tennis events during the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) 2019, held at Chengdu in China.
  • WPFG is a biennial event taking place every two years in which officers or officials from police and Fire Departments from all over the world compete in the different events.
  • World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) 2019 was the 18th edition of the event.

Australian Labuschagne becomes first ‘concussion substitute’ in Test history

  • Australia’s batsman Marnus Labuschagne has become the first cricketer in the world to be a ‘concussion substitute’ in test cricket. He replaced Steve Smith as he got hit on his neck from England seamer Jofra Archer.
  • ICC introduced the rule of replacement of a concussed player from August 01, 2019. Concussed means when a person is hit on the head. The rule says for like-for like replacement.
  • This happened during the Ashes test series that is played between Austalia and England.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra Passes Away at 82

  • Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra passed away due to health issues. He was 82.
  • Mishra had served as Chief Minister of the State three times (1975-77, 1980-83, 1989-90) and was also a minister in the Union Cabinet.
  • He was the last Congress Chief Minister of the State.

World Humanitarian Day: August 19

  • The United Nations recognised World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is observed every year on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian personnel and workers who lost or risked their lives in humanitarian service, and offer support to people affected by crises around the world.
  • The theme of 2019 WHD campaign: #WomenHumanitarians.
