Companies can now have up to 74% Differential Voting Rights (DVR) shares

  • The Central Government has liberalized the rules that would allow Indian companies to raise share capital without diluting the voting rights of all existing shareholders.
  • Before Amendment: Prior to the amendment, the Companies (Share Capital and Debentures) Rules of 2014 allowed the issue of shares with differential voting rights, with the condition that—the business should have distributable profits for the previous three years, and the capital raised through shares with differential voting rights must not exceed 26% of the post-issue capital.
  • After Amendment:
    1. The amendment has removed the condition of having three years of distributable profits.
    2. Companies can now have up to 74% Differential Voting Rights (DVR) shares of the total post issue paid-up share capital. This limit has been revised from 26%. 
    3. Now the Employee Stock Options (ESOPs) can be issued by startups to promoters or directors holding more than 10% of equity shares for 10 years from the date of their incorporation. Earlier this time period was 5 years.

President Kovind Inaugurates Bunker Museum at Maharastra Raj Bhavan

  • Indian President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the underground ‘Bunker Museum’ at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.
  • The 15,000 square feet long bunker museum, underground the Raj Bhawan, has virtual reality booths to give insight to visitors about the 19th century when the bunker was created to fire cannons at approaching enemy ships.
  • The President also inaugurated the Presidential Guest House named Jal Kiran at Raj Bhavan which will serve as the accommodation for the President and the Prime Minister during their visits to Mumbai.
  • He also laid the foundation stone of reconstruction of Maharashtra Governor’s Office-cum-Residence known as Jal Bhushan.

India gets its first national essential diagnostics list

  • India has got its first National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL) finalized by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • What is NEDL: It is a complete list of diagnostic tests, medical devices and in-vitro diagnostic device (IVD) for all levels of health care – village level, primary, secondary and tertiary care.
  • Purpose: This will create stringent national pre-qualification specifications and processes that are necessary to ensure availability of safe, effective, affordable tests of good quality as well as improving access to new diagnostics in resource-constrained settings. The purpose of this list to bridge the current regulatory system’s gap that do not cover all the medical devices and in-vitro diagnostic device (IVD).
  • With this, India has become the first country to have such a list. This comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) released the first edition of its essential diagnostics list (EDL) in May, 2018.

Rajiv Dogra authors novel titled “Second Night”

  • Former diplomat Rajiv Dogra has penned a novel titled “Second Night”. Second Night is a story of a woman determined to escape and a man who has vowed to find her.
  • This is the third book written by Rajiv Dogra the other two being – “Durand’s Curse” and “Where Borders Bleed: An Insider’s Account of Indo-Pak Relations”.
  • Dogra has served as India’s Ambassador to Italy and Romania, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Agencies in Rome and Consul General in Karachi.

Hima Das, Mohammad Anas Wins 300m Gold at Athleticky Mitink Reiter 2019 in Czech Republic

  • Top Indian sprinters Hima Das and Mohammad Anas have claimed gold each in 300m race in their respective categories at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter event in Czech Republic.
  • This was the sixth gold for the Assamese girl Hima in European races since July 2, 2019.
  • 24-year-old Anas won the men’s 300m race in 32.41 seconds.
  • Anas has already qualified for 400m event for the World Athletics Championships 2019 to be held in Doha in September-October.

Uganda beat Zambia in 2019 Victoria Rugby Cup

  • In Rugby, the national team of Uganda defeated Zambia’s national team 38-22 to win 2019 Victoria Cup held at the Kyadondo ground in Kampala, Uganda.
  • The Victoria Cup is a rugby union tournament played between four African nations involving Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia based on a double round-robin system.

Triple Oscar Winning Animation Director Richard Williams Passes Away at 86

  • Three-time Oscar winner and triple BAFTA winner legendary animation director Richard Williams passed away at the age of 86.
  • He debuted in 1958 with “The Little Island” which won him BAFTA. He received his first Oscar for his animated adaptation of Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” in 1971.
  • Williams is best known for his 1988 animated film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.
  • “The Return Of The Pink Panther” and “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” are some of his famous works. 

Noted Odia Journalist Ranjit Guru Passes Away

  • Veteran Odisha based journalist and columnist Ranjit Guru passed away following a brief illness. He was 61 
  • Guru spent a major part of his career working for Odia daily ‘Sambad’ as a senior Editor.
