ICGS Vigraha Decommissions at Visakhapatnam After 29 Years of Service

  • The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vigraha was decommissioned at the coast guard jetty in Visakhapatnam on May 15, 2019
  • ICGS Vigraha was a frontline offshore patrol vessel that was in service for 29 glorious years from 1990 to 2019.
  • The ship was the seventh offshore patrol vessel built by the Mazagaon Dock Limited, Mumbai and  commissioned on April 12, 1990.

Indian YouTuber Ajey Nagar Named Among TIME’s Top 10 ‘Next Generation Leaders 2019’

  • Ajey Nagar, an Indian YouTuber, has been named by Time magazine among the list of top 10 ‘TIME’s Next Generation Leaders 2019’.
  • The list includes 10 young people from around the world who are forging new paths in politics, music and other spheres.
  • The 19 year old Nagar has a YouTube channel named as CarryMinati which have 6,827,342 subscribers. He posted his first video on YouTube at the age of 10.
  • As per a report, India overtook the U.S. in 2018 to become the country with the biggest YouTube audience in the world.

Kerala CM rings bell at London Stock Exchange for listing of KIIFB’s masala bonds

  • On 17th May, 2019, The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, rang the bell at London Stock Exchange for listing of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board’s (KIIFB) masala bonds.
  • Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board is the first state-owned entity to issue masala bonds. Kerala is also the first state in India, to issue masala bonds.
  • KIIFB has raised Rs 2,150 crore through masala bonds at a fixed interest rate of 9.723% per annum.

BSE launches Mutual Funds app BSE StAR MF

  • BSE has launched ‘BSE StAR MF’ app to enable more participation in mutual funds and help mutual fund distributors process transactions faster.
  • BSE StAR MF mobile app supports real-time client registration and paperless transactions, creates and uploads mandate for SIPs, generates the basket of multiple orders, tracks and allows the distributor to analyse his business at his fingertips.
  • BSE StAR MF is the exchange’s mutual fund platform which helps distributors purchase and redeem mutual fund units on behalf of their clients.

HDFC Capital Advisors launches HeART Initiative for affordable housing

  • HDFC Capital Advisors has announced the launch of a new initiative named HDFC Affordable Real Estate and Technology Programme (HeART) that seeks to mentor, partner and invest in real estate technology companies that drive innovation and efficiencies within the affordable housing ecosystem.
  • As a part of HeART programme, HDFC Capital will provide a platform to real estate technology companies with innovative products aimed at creating efficiencies and lowering costs in each part of the development cycle.

Nitin Chugh to be the MD and CEO of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank from December 01

  • Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has announced that Nitin Chugh will take over as the MD and CEO of the bank w.e.f December 01, 2019 for a term of 3 years.
  • He will succeed Samit Ghosh whose term as MD and CEO ends on November 30, 2019 as he will attain the age of 70 years.
  • Nitin Chugh will take over as the president of the bank from August 2019 and will work closely with Samit Ghosh till November 30, 2019 to ensure a smooth transition.

Taiwan Becomes First Asian Nation to Legalise Same-Sex Marriage

  • The Parliament of Taiwan has passed a law on May 17, 2019 to legalize same-sex marriage. With this, Taiwan has also become the first country in Asia to do so.
  • Taiwan’s constitutional court had imposed deadline two years ago, which said that excluding same-sex couples from marriage was unconstitutional and the legislature must pass laws allowing same-sex marriage by May 24, 2019, or they would automatically become law.

ICC releases official song for World Cup titled ‘Stand By’

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released the official song for the ICC Men’s World Cup 2019 titled ‘Stand By’.
  • The song is a collaboration between the artist LORYN and the band Rudimental.
  • The ICC World Cup 2019 will be hosted by  England and Wales.

Louvre Pyramid Architect I.M. Pei Passes Away at 102

  • Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, passed away on 16 May 2019, at the age of 102.
  • I M Pei is regarded as one of the world’s leading designers of civic centers and cultural institutions.
  • He is known for the famous glass pyramid at the entrance to the Louvre Palace in Paris as well as landmark 72-story Bank of China tower in Hong Kong among others.

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia: May 17

  • The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is observed on May 17.
  • The Day aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide.
  • The theme for 2019 is Justice and Protection for All
