Website of Lokpal Inaugurated

  • The Website of the Lokpal was inaugurated on May 16, 2019 by the Chairperson, Justice Shri Pinaki Chandra Ghose.
  • The Website can be accessed at http://lokpal.gov.in.
  • It has been developed by NIC to give the basic information with respect to the working and functioning of the Lokpal.

COP meetings of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions held in Geneva

  • The joint meetings of three conventions on chemicals and waste was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 29 April to 10 May 2019.
  • The 3 conventions included:
    1. 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal  (COP 14)
    2. 9th meeting of the COP to Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and
    3. 9th meeting of the COP to Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
  • The theme of the meetings 2019 was “Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste”.

RBI releases “Payment and Settlement Systems in India: Vision 2019 – 2021″

  • The Reserve Bank of India has released its vision documents on digital payment named “Payment and Settlement Systems in India: Vision 2019 – 2021. It shows the vision of RBI for growth of Digital Payment in India.
  • The Payment Systems Vision 2021 covers the period up to December 2021.
  • Core theme of the Vision Document: ‘Empowering Exceptional (E)payment Experience’.
  • Vision Statement – Empower every Indian with access to a bouquet of e-payment options that is safe, secure, convenient, quick and affordable.
  • Vision envisages four goal-posts (4 Cs) – Competition, Cost, Convenience and Confidence. It has 36 specific action points.

RBI directs NBFCs with asset size greater than Rs.5000 crore to appoint a CRO

  • The Reserve Bank of India has directed the Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFCs) with asset size of more than Rs.50 billion (Rs 5000 Crore) to appoint a Chief Risk Officer (CRO).
  • This has been done for best risk management practices. The CRO is required to function independently so as to ensure highest standards of risk management.

SIDBI launches Scheme for Assistance to New Age Fin-Tech NBFCs

  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has launched a Scheme for Assistance to New Age Fin-Tech NBFCs registered as Investment and Credit Company (ICC) with the RBI. It as been launched on pilot basis.
  • SIDBI will extend financial assistance of up to 10 crore to new-age fintech non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) engaged in financing small businesses and other income-generating activities
  • Fintech NBFCs are digital loan companies. They leverage information technology to provide fast and convenient access to funding. 
  • Eligibility and Facts:
    • Minimum Net Owned Fund: Rs 20 Crore
    • Minimum Asset Size: Rs 50 Crore
    • Maximum Exposure/Maximum Assistance: Rs 10 Crore

Madan B Lokur appointed judge of Supreme Court of Fiji

  • Retired Indian Judge, Madan B Lokur has been appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji as a judge of its non-resident panel.
  • He will join the office from August 15, 2019 and has been appointed for a term of 3 years.

Cricket World Cup 2019 Teams to Have Dedicated Anti-Corruption Officer

    • The International Cricket Council has, for the first time in the history of ICC World Cup, appointed a a dedicated anti-corruption officer attached with all the 10 participating teams to deliver a corruption-free tournament.
    • The officials will be assigned to a team from the warm-up matches to the end of the competition, staying in the same hotel as the players and travelling with them to training and matches.
    • Prior to this, ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit had anti corruption personnel deployed at each venue. Each teams had to deal with a number of officials over the course of a tournament.
    • The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup is the 12th edition of the tournament that is scheduled to be hosted by England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019.

In a First an All-Female Referee Team Officiates Men’s AFC Cup

  • For the first time in the history of the Asian Football Confederation, an all-female referee team took charge of a men’s continental club cup clash.
  • The team had three Japanese female referees namely Yoshimi Yamashita and assistansts Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi.
  • They officiated the AFC Cup match between Myanmar’s Yangon United and Cambodia’s Naga World at the Thuwunna Stadium on May 15, 2019.
  • Before this, Women officials had been employed as assistant referees in AFC Cup matches.

China to Host Asian Cup Soccer Tournament 2023

  • The governing body for Asian soccer, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed that China will host the 2023 Asian Cup soccer tournament.
  • This announcement was made after South Korea, only bidding rival of China, withdrew from the bidding process.
  • The The Korean Football Association (KFA) has pulled the bid due to its preference for hosting the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup jointly with North Korea.

Former swimming champion M B Balakrishnan Passes Away

  • Former South Asian Games gold-medalist and Swimming Champion MB Balakrishnan passed away in road accident in Chennai. He was 29-year-old.
  • The Tamil Nadu based player won the 100m and 200m backstroke events at the South Asian Games.

Former Australian PM Bob Hawke Passes Away at 89

  • Former Prime Minister of Australia and Labor Party leader Bob Hawke, passed away. He was 89.
  • He was the longest-serving Labor Party Prime Minister who served from 1983 to 1991.
  • He is also accredited to create Australia’s universal healthcare system – Medicare.

International Day of Living Together in Peace: 16 May

  • The International Day of Living Together in Peace is held on 16th May every year since 2018.
  • The Day speaks about accepting differences and having the ability to listen to, recognize and respect others and promote peace, moderation, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity.
  • The United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate 16th May as the International Day of Living Together in Peace on 8th December 2017.
