Rajasthan’s Suman Rao Wins Miss India 2019 Beauty Pageant

  • Suman Rao, a CA student from Rajasthan, has won the Femina Miss India World 2019 beauty pageant held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium in Mumbai on June 15, 2019.
  • The 20-year-old Suman will now represent India at Miss World 2019 to be held in December in Thailand.
  • Other winners include
    • Shivani Jadhav (Chhattisgarh) – Miss Grand India 2019
    • Shreya Shanker (Bihar) – Miss India United Continents 2019
    • Sanjana Vij (Telangana) – Miss India Runner Up 2019

World’s Highest Operating Weather Stations Installed on Mount Everest

  • A team led by the National Geographic Society and Nepal’s Tribhuvan University has successfully installed the world’s highest operating weather stations on Mount Everest.
  • Total 5 weather stations have been installed that will help to provide near real-time information about mountain conditions to researchers, climbers, and the public.
  • The highest one has been installed at Balcony area (8,430 m) and South Col (7,945 m).
  • The Balcony weather station is the first weather station which is installed at an elevation above 8,000 metres.
  • The other stations were placed at Phortse (3,810 m), Everest Base Camp (5,315 m) and Camp II (6,464 m).

J&K Bank To Come Under RTI Act & CVC Guidelines From June 17

  • The Board of Directors of Jammu & Kashmir Bank, chaired by bank’s interim Chairman and Managing Director R.S. Chhibber, has decided to bring the bank under the purview of J&K RTI Act, 2009 and the CVC guidelines to ensure greater transparency & accountability.
  • This decision of the board will be effective from June 17, 2019.

ADB Sanctions Rs 1,650 cr For Tripura Infrastructure Projects

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved Rs 1,650 crore ($235 million) for various infrastructure development projects for 7 district headquarter towns in the state of Tripura.
  • Of the total approved fund, 80 percent of the amount is being provided as grant-in-aid while the remaining 20 percent loan will be repaid by the Tripura Government in due course of time
  • The towns selected for the project are Khowai, Ambassa, Dharmnagar, Kailashahar, Udaipur, Bishramganj and Belonia.

Yashovardhan Birla Declared Willful Defaulter by UCO Bank

  • Kolkata-based lender UCO Bank has declared Yashovardhan Birla, director of Birla Surya, as a willful defaulter on June 16, 2019.
  • Birla Surya Ltd owes Rs 67.65 crore plus unapplied interest to UCO bank as on 3 June, 2013.
  • Yashovardhan Birla is also the Chairman of the industrial conglomerate, Yash Birla Group.

Zuzana Caputova Takes Charge as Slovakia’s First Female President

  • Zuzana Caputova took over as the 5th President of Slovakia on June 15, 2019.
  • The 45-year-old Slovak politician, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist is the first female president of the country as well as the youngest person ever to be elected to the office.

Australia and Qatar Invited as Guest Teams in Copa America 2020

  • The South American Football Federation, CONMEBOL has invited Australia and Qatar to participate as guest teams in 2020 Copa America.
  • Qatar and Australia will join 10 South American nations in the 2020 tournament.
  • For the first time, the event will be held jointly in two countries, Colombia and Argentina.
  • The 2019 Copa America football championship is being held in Brazil.

India beat South Africa 5-1 to Win Men’s FIH Series Finals

  • India beat South Africa 5-1 to win the Men’s FIH Series Finals title held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on June 15, 2019.
