India Announces $200 Million Line of Credit for Kyrgyzstan; Inks 15 Pacts

  • Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi has announced USD 200 million line of credit for Kyrgyzstan on June 14, 2019 during India-Kyrgyz Business Forum in Bishkek in a move to upgrade their ties to the Strategic Partnership level.
  • The two countries also signed 15 agreements in various fields including on the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT), MoUs in the field of Health, security, defence, counter-terrorism and Information and Communication Technology among others.
  • PM Modi was on two days visit to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

Exim Bank Approves $245 mn Loan Agreement For Ghana and Mozambique for Agri & Rail Projects

  • Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has entered into an agreement with the Government of the Republic of Ghana as well as Mozambique to provide line of credit worth USD 245 million to support agricultural and railway projects.
  • Of the total line of credit of USD 245 million loan, Ghana will get USD 150 million to finance strengthening of agriculture mechanisation services centres.
  • While, USD 95 million for Mozambique will be used for financing procurement of railway rolling stock including locomotives, coaches and wagons

Karnataka govt announces waiver of NPA loans of about 1 Lakh farmers

  • The Karnataka government has decided to waive Non-Performing Asset loans of about 1 lakh farmers, who owe about Rs 965 crore to commercial banks.
  • The banks will waive 25 percent of the loans while the balance 75 percent, which is approximately Rs 740 crore, would be borne by the government.
  • Under the crop loan waiver scheme, a maximum of Rs two lakh would be waived. The remaining would be borne by the farmer.

Japan To Invest Rs. 13,000 Crore In Infrastructure Projects In Northeast

  • The Government of Japan has announced that it will invest an amount of 205.784 billion Yen (Rs.13,000 crore approx), in various ongoing and also new projects in different states of the North- Eastern region of India.
  • Some of the Projects includes – Guwahati Water Supply Project and Guwahati Sewage Project in Assam, Northeast Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project spread over Assam and Meghalaya, Northeast Network Connectivity Improvement Project in Meghalaya, Bio-diversity Conservation and Forest Management Project in Sikkim, Sustainable Forest Management Project in Tripura, Technical Cooperation Project for Sustainable Agriculture & Irrigation in Mizoram, Forest Management Project in Nagaland, etc.

  • ZestMoney has partnered with Digit Insurance to offer insurance against EMIs to its 5 million customer base. ZestMoney is a Bengaluru based digital lending startup.
  • The partnership will enable Zest customers to be relieved of the debt in case they are not able to repay because of unforeseen circumstances. 

D Sarangi re-elected as SRFI president

  • Debendranath Sarangi has been re-elected as president of Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI).
  • The national coach Cyrus Poncha, has been elected as the secretary general of SRFI.

Akshay Patra’s school meals project wins BBC Award

  • Bengaluru-based NGO, Akshaya Patra, has been awarded the BBC World Service Global Champion Award for running one of the world’s largest school meals project.
  • The charity started its mid-day meal programme almost 20 years ago. It feeds 1.75 million children all over India with hot, freshly prepared meals.

  • The Global Wind Day is held worldwide on 15 June to celebrate wind energy. It is organised by WindEurope and GWEC (Global Wind Energy Council).
  • The theme for 2019 is “Future Wind”.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: June 15

  • The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on 15 June every year to raise awareness and make step towards any kind of abuse and suffering inflicted on elderly people. 
  • The day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011.
