NABARD Launches Rs 700-crore Venture Capital Fund for Agri & Rural Startups

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has launched Rs 700-crore venture capital fund for equity investments in startups eengaged in agriculture, food and rural development space.
  • The fund called NABVENTURES Fund I, has been launched by Nabventures, a subsidiary of NABARD. 
  • This is the first time that the rural development bank has launched a fund of its own.
  • The fund has a proposed corpus of Rs 500 crore with an option to retain over-subscriptions of Rs 200 crore called as the greenshoe option.

Hyderabad Airport Ranked 8th Best in the World; Qatar Airport Tops

  • The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad has been declared as the 8th best airport in the world out of 132 airports as per the report of AirHelp, an organization that specializes in air traveller rights.
  • The airport received a rating of 8.27 on a scale of 10 to be placed in top 10 list.
  • The Hamad International Airport in Doha has topped the list with a rating of 8.39 followed by Tokyo Haneda International Airport and Athens International Airport at second and third respectively.
  • The three Airports have retained their top three positions in the list since the ratings began in 2015.
  • Lisbon’s Portela Airport and the Kuwait International Airport were the worst airports ranked at 131 and 132 spots respectively.

Investigating Officer in Nirbhaya Case Receives McCain Institute Award for Courage and Leadership

  • Chhaya Sharma, the IPS officer who led the investigation team of the infamous Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, has been honoured with the 2019 McCain Institute Award for Courage and Leadership on May 10, 2019.
  • The McCain Institute award is given to those who show courage on behalf of human rights, humanitarian compassion, justice, freedom, and human dignity.

Sanjiv Puri Appointed New Chairman and Managing Director of ITC

    • ITC Limited has appointed its MD Sanjiv Puri as the Chairman and Managing Director of the company with effect from May 13, 2019.
    • This decision was made following the demise of noted industry leader and erstwhile ITC Chairman Y C Deveshwar.

Mumbai Indians Defeats Chennai Super Kings to Win Record 4th IPL title

  • Mumbai Indians defeated the Chennai Super Kings by 1 run in the finals to win their record fourth title in Indian Premier League (IPL) on May 12, 2019 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad
  • The 2019 season of the IPL was the twelfth season since the professional Twenty20 cricket league was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.
  • Most successful wicket-keeper – Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the most successful wicket-keeper in the history of IPL by taking his dismissals tally to 132, surpassing his India teammate Dinesh Karthik (131).
  • Orange Cap (Most Runs)- David Warner (SRH) for being the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 692 runs.
  • Purple Cap (Most Wickets)- Imran Tahir (CSK) for finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 26 wickets.
  • Most Valuable Player (Man of the Series)- Andre Russell of Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Emerging Player of the Tournament- Shubman Gill of Kolkata Knight Riders

Lewis Hamilton Beats Bottas to Win 2019 Spanish GP

  • British racing driver Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix for a third consecutive year after overtaking Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.
  • It marks the Mercedes’ record-breaking win as the pair of Hamilton and Bottas has been taking the top two positions on the podium in all five races of 2019 season.
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was third.

Novak Djokovic Beats Stefanos Tsitsipas to Win Madrid Open 2019

  • Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 to win his third Madrid Open title on May 12, 2019. 
  • Earlier he won Madrid title in 2011, 2016 and latest in 2019.
  • With this win he has tied with Rafael Nadal for winning 33rd Masters 1000 title.
