Nirmala Sitharaman Among Forbes List of World’s 100 most powerful women in 2019; Angela Merkel Tops

  • India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been named among the Forbes 2019 list of ‘The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’. She has been ranked at 34th position.
  • Sitharaman is India’s first female finance minister to hold the portfolio on full time basis.
  • Along with Sitharaman, HCL Corporation CEO and Executive Director Roshni Nadar Malhotra (54) and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (65) are also in the top 100 list.
  • The Forbes 2019 list of ‘The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ has been topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
  • President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde is on second spot.
  • Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is ranked third.

Transforming Education Conference for Humanity (TECH) 2019 Held in Visakhapatnam

  • The third edition of the TECH 2019 (Transforming Education Conference for Humanity) was held from December 10-12, 2019 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • TECH 2019 was organised by UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in partnership with the State Government of Andhra Pradesh, India and supported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
  • The conference aimed at showcasing the role of digital technologies in enabling a shift from “transmissive pedagogies” to “transformative pedagogies” to create more peaceful and sustainable societies.
  • It was based on 3 themes:
    • Transformative Pedagogies for SEL (Social and Emotional learning)
    • Reimagining Learning Spaces for Planetary Citizenship
    • Data, Learning & Education – Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

International Seminar on Climate Smart Farming Systems Held in New Delhi

  • The “International Seminar on Climate Smart Farming Systems” for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries was held in New Delhi from December 11 to 13, 2019.
  • Th three day event was inaugurated by the Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi.
  • The Seminar was organized by the Department of Agricultural Research & Education, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare, Government of India and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • It was attended by participants from all the Seven BIMSTEC Countries : Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and BIMSTEC Secretariat.
  • Objective: Sharing experience to enable improvement of tropical smallholder farming systems for greater productivity and resilience to climate change through ecological approaches.

36th International Geological Congress to be Held in India in March 2020

  • India will host the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) in New Delhi in March 2020.
  • The theme of the conference will be ‘Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Development’.
  • Popularly known as the Olympics of Geosciences, IGCs are a prestigious global geoscientific events held once in four years and participated by around 5000-6000 geoscientists from all across the world.

3-Day National Tribal Dance Festival to be held in Raipur from December 27

  • The first-ever National Tribal Dance Festival of India at international level is going to be held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh from December 27 to 29.
  • The three day festival will see international folk artistes from 23 states of India and six other countries, including Uganda, Belarus, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, portray respective tribal folk culture.

United States Surpasses Kuwait as India’s 6th biggest oil supplier; Iraq remains on top

  • According to data furnished by the oil ministry to parliamentary committee, United States has surpassed Kuwait to become India’s sixth largest oil supplier.
  • US supplied 5.4 million tonnes of crude oil to India during the first six months of 2019-20 (April-September).
  • This is 70 percent more as compared to about 3.1 million tonnes of oil sourced from the US in the same period a year back.
  • Iraq continues to be top crude oil supplier of India with 26 million tonnes of crude oil supplied during April to September, meeting India’s one-fourth oil need alone.
  • India bought 111.4 million tonnes of crude oil from overseas during April-September of 2019-20.
  • India is the world’s third largest energy consumer and is 83 percent dependent on imports to meet its oil needs.

IRDAI Constitutes 10 member Working Group Under Smt. T. L. Alamelu to Recommend Loss Prevention and Loss Minimization in General Insurance Industry

  • The insurance regulator, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has constituted a Working Group to make recommendations for loss prevention and loss minimization in the general insurance industry.
  • The WG will be headed by IRDAI Member (Non-Life), Smt T. L. Alamelu.

Role & Responsibility of the Working Group

  • Suggest segment-wise ways and means to improve Loss Prevention and Loss Minimisation in insurance.
  • Evaluate current practices followed by insurance industry in the area of Loss Prevention and Loss Minimisation and suggest ways to synergise the activities in order to ensure better Loss Prevention and Loss Minimisation.
  • Give recommendations for promoting research, education and services related to Loss Prevention and Loss Mitigation.

Moody’s Reduces India’s GDP Rate for FY20 to 5.6 Percent

  • Moody’s Investors Service has lowered its 2019 GDP growth forecast for India to 5.6 percent based on slow employment growth weighs on consumption.
    • GDP For 2019-20 – 5.6%
    • GDP For 2020-21 – 6.6%
    • GDP For 2021-22 – 6.7%

Mastercard Joins Hand With Federal Bank to Offer Identity Check Security for Digital Transactions

  • Global payments technology major Mastercard has tied up with Private Sector, scheduled commercial bank, Federal Bank, to provide an additional layer of identity check security called ‘Mastercard Identity Check’ for digital transactions by bank’s cardholders.
  • ‘Mastercard Identity Check’ is a global authentication program which makes use of the latest authentication standards of EMV 3-D Secure.
  • It provides banks with a secure and user-friendly way to authenticate cardholders without the use of static passwords, and facilitate higher approval rates, improving the authentication experience for merchants, issuers and cardholders.

FSSAI and NASSCOM Foundation Partners to Develop Mobile App ‘Food Donation in India’ to Reduce Food Wastage

  • In order to prevent food wastage, Food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and Nasscom Foundation have signed an MoU on December 13, 2019 to develop a mobile application and set up a 24×7 helpline number.
  • The mobile app named ‘Food Donation in India’ will connect donors with surplus edibles to food distribution organisations to donate food to the needy and hence reduce the wastage of food in the country through food donation.

Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma becomes first non-footballer to be named La Liga brand ambassador

  • In a historic moment, Indian cricketer and star opening batsman Rohit Sharma has been named as the Brand Ambassador of La Liga in India on December 12.
  • La Liga is the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system
  • With this, Rohit has also become the first non-footballer in the world to be named one of La Liga’s global ambassadors.
