Malala Day Observed on July 12

  • July 12 was declared by the United Nations as Malala Day on July 12, 2013 to honour the young activist, Malala Yousafzai.
  • July 12 also marks the birth anniversary of Yousafzai, the Pakistani human rights activist, and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
  • On her 16th birthday, falling on 12 July 2013, Yousafzai delivered speech at the UN to call for worldwide access to education of women and children

2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index States More Than Half of World’s Poor are Children

  • The 2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) was released on July 11, 2019.
  • The report is based on a study conducted on 101 countries including 31 low income, 68 middle income and 2 high income with combined population of 1.3 billion people.
  • It considered 10 indicators namely nutrition, sanitation, child mortality, drinking water, years of schooling, electricity, school attendance, housing, cooking fuel and assets to determine MPI.

Significant Highlights of the Report

  • As per the report, out of 1.3 billion people more than two-thirds (886 million) live in middle-income countries.
  • Around 663 million of the total population are children under the age of 18 with largest proportion (85 percent) living in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
  • A separate group of 10 countries with a combined population of around 2 billion people were identified to illustrate the level of poverty reduction. Each country showed statistically significant progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1. The fastest reductions were seen in India, Cambodia and Bangladesh.
  • The result stated that India and Cambodia reduced their MPI values the fastest.
  • India’s MPI value reduced from 0.283 in 2005-06 to 0.123 in 2015-16.
  • The Indian population living in multidimensional poverty in 2005-2006 was about 640 million people (55.1%) and this reduced to 369 million people (27.9%) in 2015-16.
  • In all, India lifted 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016 as per the report.

Vikas Swarup to Take Over as Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs from August 1

  • Senior diplomat Vikas Swarup has been appointed as the Secretary (consular, passport, visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the External Affairs Ministry. He will take office with effect from August 1, 2019.
  • Swarup, the 1986-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, is at present India’s High Commissioner in Ottawa.

Himalayan states’ conclave 2019 to be held in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

  • The 2019 Himalayan states’ conclave will be held at Mussoorie, Uttarakhand on July 28, 2019. The prime focus will be on sustainable development.
  • The conclave aims at discussing the problems faced by Himalayan states.
  • The conclave will host the Chief Ministers of the Himalayan states – Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland, along with administrators and specialists.

First Global Conference on Media Freedom Held in London

  • The first of its kind Global Conference for Media Freedom 2019 was held on 10 – 11 July 2019 in London.
  • The Conference was co-hosted by United Kingdom and Canadian governments to defend media freedom and improve the safety of journalists who report across the world. 
  • The Indian delegation attending the Conference included Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash, Member of Parliament and journalist Swapan Das Gupta and Kanchan Gupta, Member, Press Council.

L&T Finance arm gets $100 million from AIIB for green energy funding

  • Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has announced that it will provide USD 100 million in loans to L&T Infrastructure Finance Company for on-lending to wind and solar power infrastructure projects in India.
  • This is the first loan from AIIB to a non-banking finance company.

Flipkart to launch co-branded credit card in partnership with Axis Bank, Mastercard

  • e-commerce company Flipkart has partnered with Axis Bank and Mastercard for a co-branded credit card.
  • The credit card will offer a 5% discount on Flipkart purchases and other benefits. The Flipkart-Axis Bank Credit Card will be offered to select users in July and it will expand to all over the coming weeks.
  • Some other e-commerce giants who offer credit cards are: Snapdeal (with HDFC Bank) and Amazon (with ICICI Bank) 

Former Bengal & Railways leg-spinner Soumendranath Kundu Passes Away

  • Former first-class cricketer, Soumendranath Kundu, who played for Bengal and Railways has passed away. He was 77.
  • Kundu was a leg-spinner and took 127 wickets in 30 First Class matches between 1958-59 and 1968-69. 
  • He was conferred the CAB Kartick Bose Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013-14.

Senior BJP Leader and Former Goa Minister Wilfred Mesquita Passes Away

  • Former Goa Minister and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Dr Wilfred Menezes Mesquita passed away. He was 70.
  • Mesquita was former cabinet minister of Revenue, Environment, Sports and Youth Affairs, Power, Law and Judiciary and Legislative Affairs, Government of Goa.
  • He was a member of BJP, Goa since 2007.
